oh how fun! I havent been to a pig roast in years and years!! this area, and I really appreciate the honesty! Hubs doesnt like the carry laws in the state though, esp if we are in the middle of nowhere with the bears, but I have no clue what laws are in the south on that issue either. Anyways, I am open to going ANYWHERE but here, just want to live someplace else for once in my life!

Jay and I went to an "auction" this afternoon. They had poultry and small animals. The trouble was when the highest bid was reached most of the sellers decided it wasn't enough so the sales fell through. What I want to know is why sell at an auction if you have a set price in mind. I would think it would be better to advertise on craigslist or something. We left half way through as it was a farce. Most of the birds were bantams. What do people do with bantams? I also thought the folks running it were kind of rough with the animals. Maybe I am just a softy but Jay thought the same. We didn't even handle our birds that we processed in that manner.

There is a livestock auction every Wednesday here. Never been but I want to go.

Actually, my Silkies were the last to catch it... guess they're a bit slow on the uptake... have had several different varieties of OEGB's, Araucana bantams, Cream Legbar, and even Marans gone broody this year... my one Split Am is the best one though... she gets her kids fully self sufficient at 3-4 weeks old...

Oh, and watched that a couple times... not one of my faves, lol...

If you ever make it to a livestock auction, you'll likely see the whole spectrum, from some pretty nice animals to the ones on their last legs. I spent a lot of time at horse auctions from here to Paris, TN, back when I was field trialing. If I wasn't looking for gaited stock for myself, I usually knew of someone looking for something better than they had. I even sold a couple Walkers at the local auction for a friend who didn't have the time to go himself. I miss those days.

You know those CB I mentioned earlier? Well, here is one that I don't want to get rid of. He's a Black Australorp, and he's birchen! I've seen the man's set up who hatched him and I don't think he could be a cross, but I've never seen another roo like him. If I had room, I'd keep him and breed him--with what, I'm not sure.






I've searched birchen Australorp for ages and haven't found anything like him. He kind of looks like a Birchen Marans, but that breeder didn't have any Marans that color. I hate to see a bird this pretty end up in a stew pot so soon.

Our BLRW are getting pretty big.



We have a scissor beak pullet.

It doesn't seem to be too bad. She'll go in our free range flock. But now I'm not sure if the genes are present for it or not.

their website says horses are the first Saturday of the month but they have auctions every Wednesday. I want to go but now our girls are back in school I don't know if I should chance it. Its about 20 min away and the auction starts at 230 which would leave me about 40 min before I would have to leave to make the bus stop at 330. I would only be going for ducks or chickens and it says they are for sale starting at 215. So do they not auction them?

He is cool looking. The pullet hatch I did I had 4 eggs from my Black Austrolorp (I actually think it was one of hers that was the only quitter, so I think I got 3 chicks) and they are mixed but the kiddos, especially 2 of them, are really neat looking- at least I think so.....lol The one in my avatar is actually one of her offspring.

My sister has a hen that has extreme cross beak that's she's had a couple years I think and she says that it does well-I guess it must since it's still alive. Knock on wood-thank God- haven't delt with that yet.

Got the coop 90% done. Ordered the trim & soffits today and should be at the store by Friday. Got the exterior & interior walls done. Next is to seal the walls & floors, build the nesting boxes & roosts, figure out how to lay it all out and get the poop door. I want to put it on a timer. Oh and cant forget the fencing for the run.

Yeah, they should auction them, though it sounds like they don't generally have too many. If you've never been to an auction, though, I'd suggest you go & observe a couple times before you jump in with both feet; sometimes those auctioneers are so good at what they do that you could wind up paying more for an animal than what it's worth, or what you thought you were paying. An auction that sells poultry could also be a good place to develop contacts for hatching eggs if you get to know some of the vendors
