She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

I let my chickens out for some free ranging today. Since it's super slow tonight, I'll post some pics!
These are the first two chickens I ever hatched! I know you're not supposed to breed brother to sister but I don't know if the eggs came from the same mom/dad and they are very bonded:

Look at how big my little cockerel is getting!! He still sits on my lap, though. Hoping he doesn't change to much once the hormones kick in:

Here's a question. The female was kind of squatting in front of him today. I've been hearing some of you talk about squatting. Does this mean she's ready to mate or possible lay an egg?:

Ruby they are lovely!
I believe the squatting starts shortly before they start laying, and when they do it for the rooster, it means they are giving the rooster the go-ahead to mount them.

My guess, based on my own little flock, is that you'll be collecting eggs within the month.

:yesss: that sounds awesome!!

Thank you! If you ever want eggs, just ask, no charge!!

What's wrong with him!! He had the green light!!

Here's a couple more and I'll stop!!

Don't stop!! I absolutely LOVE your silkies. They make mine look like paupers...lol

She's almost 18 weeks old and starting to act a little different. I'm hoping soon!! This is my first year too!!
It probably is. The first one of mine that started squatting was just trying to pysch me out though. I thought for sure she'd be the first to lay and it wouldn't be too long....ya, I think she did that for a month and one of my other hens that weren't squatting gave me my first egg....lol

I am so sorry to hear that, but thankful that 12 made it through. Ok, everyone avert your eyes...
:hugs

Thank you. It breaks my heart, but I guess its yet another part of raising chicks...one that I thought would never happen to me, but it did. More what-ifs to learn from... I feel like this hatch has been cursed.
