So my previous post about guessing what that chick is, I was rewarded with the correct answer. Thanks y'all for putting your two cents in. Its a project bird. Red Orpington.

Yes, Grata Barn (Cry Baby in Icelandic) finally settled down and is 1 of my quietest and she still loves to be held and cuddled, everyone else scatters when I put my hand in the bator, she sits there and waits for me to pick her up, lol. The little black 1 died in the middle of the night lastnightI don't know what happened. Around 11 he started crying and just wouldn't quiet down for any length of time, I fed them thinking maybe he was hungry and he ate like normal and he had been drinking water with Poly-Vi-Sol in it. Something just looked off about the scab on his naval. It looked like it had gotten bigger. I think it had started to ooze at 1 point cause when I checked all their navals around 8 lastnight he had crusty stuff around the scab on his that hadn't been there before so I put another dab of iodine on it and some Neosporin and left it be. His belly felt kind of hard up above his naval though. I'm thinking maybe his naval had gotten infected?
All the others are doing great. I'mthat they stay that way.
Wow, that sounds like excellent (above and beyond!) care of a reptile! Good luck! I had a neighbor once that had one. That thing was mean. LOL I do not have fond memories...
Hmmm... I think I'm feeling female on the dark silkie, but if she turns out to be a boy, I'll take him off your hands!![]()
And your little sectioned off area looks great! Just one question... is that an open gap above that one section? The side closest to the green waterer? Could they reach it to get out, or could the bigger ones get in through there? I know they aren't the most nimble, so maybe not.
I moved my 7-week-olds to the small pen yesterday, so last night was their first night without heat, but it only got down to about 50. That pen has a cut-out in the fence between it and the bigger run. I stitched it back up with wire, but apparently not enough, because hubby called and told me one of the babies was on the wrong side of the fence, and Katherine had the baby trapped in the corner! Not an issue for the larger birds, but I guess the little ones can still squirt through the gaps. Guess I have some "sewing" to do!
Speaking of nimble chicks, these Icelandics are blowing my mind, I have found them in places I was sure they couldn't get to. When the brown chick hatched with the really bad naval and then the little black 1 too, I put them in a basket that was a good 7 inches tall and I put the basket in the brooder, I looked in 5 minutes later and the oldest chick was in the basket with them!! And they are insanely fast too, like little spiders or mice, lol.
@Ruby: The black chick had a bad naval but the worst was the brown 1. He's still alive and causing trouble, lol. His favorite thing to do is wait til all the others are eating and he'll run into them all and knock them out of the way. It's funny when it happens cause he's so fast its like 1 minute he's in the middle of the brooder and then a split second later he's across the brooder and 2 or 3 of the other chicks have been knocked over.
BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing. All we have around here are brown and dull green.
Luckily she and her sister were bought mostly just to keep my other goose, Lacie, company. Lacie is a human imprinted goose (imprinted on me) and her mate died in transit. I tried to hatch her companion geese the year after I got her, and succeeded, but somehow they had mycoplasma - still not sure if they were born with it or somehow caught it living in my indoor brooding area - and they had to be culled, along with all the chicks I had had that year and my marans flock, which it spread to before I got it contained. Then this year I bought some sebbie babies at the NH chickenstock and hatched a few from a local breeder and a freak accident killed them all. A one gallon waterer in their brooder sprang a leak, flooded it, and they all died from being chilled before I noticed.
Then these two showed up on craigslist and I jumped at the chance to get Lacie some friends. I paid a pretty decent price for them too, since their breeder is actually head of a poultry fanciers club in my area and his birds are show birds![]()
So really they are serving their intended purpose as friends for Lacie, even if they aren't as friendly as I would like. I'll be ordering a gander this year and raising it to be friendly, and then Lacie will have a mate. These two will also probably breed with him but their eggs will never hatch.

As you can see, she really enjoys chewing on my camera strap, and she was an adorable baby. Followed me around everywhere. She is pictured here 'helping' me build a coop for someone who was buying it from me. So she's the real reason I bought them, and if she's happy, I'm happy. Still a bit irked I paid good money for purebred showbirds and got crosses, but the seller likely didn't know his female had cheated on her mate with a wild goose, so I'm not mad at him.
X2.Lacie is lovely! Sorry about all the troubles. I lost 6 of my last hatch, at less than a week old, when the brooder light bulb burned out and they trampled the smaller ones.
And its quite nice of you to not be too mad at the breeder, but I'm thinking a good breeder should have been able to tell these weren't pure, right? Maybe he might refund part of your money??
I would definitely give him a heads up. If his breeding pens are not enclosed and a CG got in he needs to know about it. If he's legit he will be very grateful and apologetic at the least. I would want to know.I'm honestly not sure. When he sold them to me he said they were eight to ten weeks old (although they seemed a little big for that) so maybe he thought they would grow more and fill out? I might contact him just to give him a heads up but he lives pretty far away and I'd probably spend in gas what he'd be willing to give me back if he was willing to do a partial refund.
Could very well be. I don't know enough about the breed to know if he would be able to tell that something was 'off' with them at eight weeks old - if that's how old they really were.
OMG love the pics!

I know. It's terrible to say but if I had gotten another 1 just like him it would've made it a little easier, it would've still been sad but just a little easier. All these are so different from 1 another though. He was the only 1 that was black. Hatching Icelandics is truely like a box of chocolates, you never what you're going to get.I woke up to nurse the baby around 2amand heard a chick crying....came out and it was on the living room floor!! This batch of chicks are way more rambunctious than any of my previous batches! It's funny how each batch has their own personality.
Oh ok! Well at least he's doing good. Maybe that one just had a weaker immune system. It's so sad to lose a chick!
