Rye or wheat... but I'd go with wheat in the run... wheat is more beneficial for the chooks... and super easy to sprout... I sprout wheat for mine, chooks and ducks...

Agreed. Rye makes for a great winter lawn, wheat would be better in the run for the chickens.

I'm going to make some grazing frames since the crew has now eliminated all growing things from the run. They have a few flakes of alfalfa in there now to tear apart as they like, and still get all the kitchen scraps. (They ate the last of the garden trimmings the other day.) I have alfalfa seeds for sprouting, maybe I'll pick up some wheat as well.

Always sand; no shortage of that in SC; must be some dry sand SOMEWHERE around there, even if you have to spread it out on a dry tarp.

What type of grass seeds would do well this time of year? I would love to thicken up my whole back yard along with the run area.

Winter rye for something that will come up quick and hold over the winter. Put out Kentucky 31 fescue with it, and the fescue will have a good root base by next spring, and it will take over when the rye dies. Right now is the perfect time to plant

Last year, I did a mix of Wheat, Barley, and BOSS. I also picked up a 4# bag of Plot Strike, and sprouted that for them, but the germination wasn't the best with that. They did enjoy it, and I figured that the seeds that didn't germinate would still have a lot of nutrient.

I'm converting my garden to Back to Eden. Also tossing wood chips in the run, along with all the garden debris, old hay, any thing organic that I can get my hands on. Hope to have a nice thick layer built up within the next 6 - 8 months. After that's established, I may make some grazing frames for the following winter.
