She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

She is very, very adorable! How do you sex them as chicks?

I can't, lol. I'm calling her a she and hoping that's what she is, lol! Although I can vent sex waterfowl, I don't quite have chicks down yet. I really should practice on these guys though because apparently it's easier with fibro breeds like ACs and silkies.

I think it is because they are domestic ducks.  The wild mallards that sneak nests into our rhododendrons or other protected places lay a clutch of 12-14 in one spot and sit them.  We usually find the nests because she will roll duds out 15-20 feet away, so we just do a search radius.

I'm betting if the wild mallards saw you picking up their eggs each day, they'd start moving them around too...

My aunt had jack Russell's. Wonderful dogs but definitely not meant for a crate. They need exercises and lots of running. Glad he found you!
:fl good luck!
That sounds really good! Wish you could cook for me!
What an adorable picture! I love it!
That's great for shipped eggs. What day is today? Tell her she can't break those eggs when she lays them! :gig
These are great pics, K!! Looks like you had an awesome hatch!! Glad you like the new hatcher!
Not fun if you're hoping for eggs to eat or incubate!

I don't remeber which day they're on... they're due Thanksgiving Day, lol... she put her head down, it was sad...

Say hello to the newest ayam cemani on my farm :love

Her middle toes are clear instead of black, which means they will turn black with age, but it's not as good as them being actually black so I probably won't keep her for my breeding flock. Tonight I think I'll slip her under Snap, who changed nests again and lost all her eggs that weren't killed during her other nest changing shenanigans.

She is adorable!!! :love

Do you vent sex then? Just curious...

I have a question about oyster shell. First, does it act like grit? Or do you still need grit? And second, if you use egg layer feed, do you still need oyster shell?
She is very, very adorable! How do you sex them as chicks?

Grit is definitely different than oyster shell, oyster shell eventually dissolves... but if they're on dirt of any kind, usually there is some kind of grit they can get to...
I always give out oyster shell or crushed egg shells on the side... some need more than others and I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and it's not there... but that's me...

His was an interesting story: I ran paper routes for 20+ years, and saw an ad posted on the bulletin board @ one of my apartment stops. I was looking for a b'day gift for my wife, & was coming up blank, so I called & made arrangements to see the dog. I pulled up & saw a lady with a JR on a lead. I spoke to the dog & knelt down to his level, the lady dropped the lead, and the dog ran up to me like a long-lost friend. Jacks only seem to come two ways; they're either overly friendly or real ankle biters. Seems the dog actually belonged to the lady's son, but he'd moved & couldn't have a dog. He'd paid $300 for the dog as a pup, so he was obviously pure-bred (unless the son was an idiot). The lady was new in town, and in real estate sales. She was gone all day, & felt sorry for having to keep him crated all day. I took him right away. For a long time he rode with me on the paper route; he loved riding in the car. He only went after the chickens once, killing a hen. We had a very serious discussion following that indiscretion, & there was never another problem.

I did have a pullet drop one just the other day when I picked her up. I also witnessed my little cochin bantam drop one, just after the cockerel tried to mount her.
My duck was picking a new spot about every week to 10 days. I built her a small shelter and she laid her egg in it for about a month, until last weekend, when I was gone. She laid Saturdays egg in the shelter, then Sundays got laid in a different spot, so all last week she laid them in the spot where she had laid on Sunday. Yesterday I had 2 in that spot, so it wasn't that she didn't want to lay 2 in the same spot. I don't know why she changed.... Oh yes I do... She's a duck! Lol

My oldest duck thinks she's a chicken, she has her own well defended nest in the coop, she'll rip out neck feathers. The others just lay wherever even in the kid pool we use as a pond. Incredibly silly birds!

If he doesn't become a snuggler, don't stress over it. Our dog was 8 months old when we adopted him from Michigan Humane Society. He was feral...a runner...no rules, no respect, and a firm no touch policy. He was not the best candidate for a dog to bring home for two kids.

He is 9 now. He will still run off whenever he can slip through the door. He still will not snuggle. He will sneak up on beds and rumple pillows, and he loves back scratches. But he will never kiss and never snuggle and turns away if we "invade his space" too much. We will not bring in a new dog while he is alive, because we don't want him to impart his bad habits that we cannot break, but we love him nonetheless.

A family came by to take a look at the turkeys, and their little girl ran up and kissed his face and ears. Surprise...he didn't move away, he offered a paw, he laid on his side and almost rolled over. I just do not understand that dog. White Castles, Pupperoni, rides and walks he will debase himself for. Other than that, he is usually aloof.
He wants to, you can see it in his actions and attempts. I think he'll come around in a couple weeks. He may never let anyone lift him up, but I think the trust and affection will come in time.

hard to remember where we are sometimes when we're having fun . also what seems harmless to some others find offensive .

you just never know. if fear of offending others rules the world then nothing would ever be said . I for one refuse to live like that . I always try to consider others .it's helps to keep my foot out of my mouth . but am not going to let it rule my life.So every once in a while I have to stop and pull out afoot or two besides I need them to walk . now some chick pictures not good though.

this one left the hatching party early

Great! Congrats! Love the colors.

She was being super picky about where she wanted to lay her egg today... kept finding spots and making nests, but wouldn't lay it... guess she held it in too long and when she relaxed in my hands it literally fell right out...

Oh, WV scared a shelless egg outta 1 of her new laying pullets the other day... stranger things have happened, lol...
All I can think of is the begining of the GOONIES and the opening the gate for Chunk.

I can't, lol. I'm calling her a she and hoping that's what she is, lol! Although I can vent sex waterfowl, I don't quite have chicks down yet. I really should practice on these guys though because apparently it's easier with fibro breeds like ACs and silkies.
LOL

@AmyLynn here's my girl, she's pug, Shiba inu, and beagle... sooo good with the kids!

She's a lot more red in person especially on her back. I love this mutt!
I love that face!! lol

I don't find "Chester" (I think we are going to go with "Buster") an attractive dog, rather plain, but we are going to give him lots of love and attention and make him feel like a movie star....lol

What are those disks under your eggs

a little something I came up with and have applied for a patent on along with the tool to make them . they are 1/4 inch Styrofoam oval rings for hand turning and locking down to hatch .I got tired of the eggs rolling and also they help to keep the egg slightly tilted . they work well until they start hatching and the chicks still manage to push them out .

Dad had a stroke before he came to stay with us that took his ability to speak. He had to go through speech therapy & learn to talk again. His therapist was working with him one day; she'd hold flash cards up & he was to tell her what picture was on the card. She held up a picture of a car, & he said "57". She says "No, Mr. Whiteside, try again". He says "57". She says "No, it's a car". He says "It's a '57 Chevrolet, da...it".  He was right!
Lmao!! That's probably what I would've said too. I'm kind of a gear head though. But that sounds like my dad. I grew up calling just about every car by it's year. My truck was the '86, my next truck was the '95. My dad has a Thunderbird that we call the '57 and he's got a 32 Ford 3 window coupe that we call the '32. Now that we're up in the 2000's though it kind of ruins it :/ I still catch myself doing it with 1 of my newer trucks. I call it either the '06 or the green truck. They're all Ford's so theres no need to distinguish make, lol. The diesel we call the 250 and we have an Excursion that we call The X. The Mustang we just call the Stang or the Mustang. If we ever get 2 trucks the same year and color I think we'd be lost :/ Maybe we'll call them his and hers, lol.

Sorry to hear about your silkies ross! Congrats on the calf, turk.

Silkies need a higher humidty to do well than the Legbars... I don't have good luck incubating those together... I knew better, so yes, my fault... I'll get you more in Spring...

And 2 boys, nice! But now we gotta get you pullets, dangit!

I didn't know that about silkies. Interesting.
Good laugh in here at the minute.

I might have accidentally un Broodied my hen, moved her and the eggs to a new coop as I'm still loosing eggs in the one she was in and don't want to loose all the chicks as they hatch again. Hopefully she will return to sitting on them and finish the hatch.

Those fickle hens.

Decision was made and deed has been done. We processed Punkin. His aggression was too much, and I couldn't risk giving him to someone else and causing them problems. So if he was going to be eaten, it might as well be by us. We fed him long enough, he can return the favor.
It wasn't as bad as I expected either. An innocent bird would probably be a little more difficult for me, but he made the decision alot easier.
Sorry to hear that but I agree. It was for the best.

I sold my first two pullets today!! $20 each! A dad and his 3 pre-teen daughters were going gaga for the silkies. Very nice family. His daughters were in love with the two little pullets. I was sad when I was packing them up and then felt better after I saw how nice the family was. Then I bought 2 silkie hens today!! One is 12 months and the other is 18 months old. Both are laying but the previous owners don't think they are fertile. So hopefully one of my cockerels will figure out how to do the deed soon and I will have fertile eggs! They are in quarantine now but PO said they were house pets and lived In the guest bedroom and have not touched soil. Can that be for real?? Do you think they still need a full month quarantine? Here's a pic:

Congrats!

What a sweetheart. I hope it's a girl for you, too.

Very nice looking dog. Sometimes I think mutts are the most beautiful.

FYI. I am on day 2 of Easter Egger hatching. If I only turn twice a day but space it so it's 12 hours each would that work? Over the weekend I can turn more than that but not during the week.
