FYI. I am on day 2 of Easter Egger hatching. If I only turn twice a day but space it so it's 12 hours each would that work? Over the weekend I can turn more than that but not during the week.

Guess I shoulda explained more about the Silkie eggs... and it goes for bantam eggs in general... they should be run at the regular standard humidity levels to do well... plus, I never have good luck mixing bantam and lf in the same batch...

My Legbars are really round and glossy, so they do better with very, very low humidity... little bantam eggs lose moisture quicker and easier than lf eggs, so they lose too much at that level...

12 hrs apart should be fine, I think...

I would only set 4 of those eggs and one of them is likely bad too. The others are clears.

I can't, lol. I'm calling her a she and hoping that's what she is, lol! Although I can vent sex waterfowl, I don't quite have chicks down yet. I really should practice on these guys though because apparently it's easier with fibro breeds like ACs and silkies.

Ok, I know some breeds you can tell at hatch, so I thought there might be a way with the AC's! Lol. I read about vent sexing and tried it on two chicks that hatched. Before anyone freaks out....I didn't really do it. I just looked real close, pushed around the belly a little (very gently) while looking to see if anything stuck out. kinda how you check a rabbit. I just did it for fun to see if my guesses were right. I wrote down 1 girl and 1 boy. Well when they grew up the opposite was true! So I blew a 50/50 shot on both of them!! I ordered a DNA test kit for 2 important chicks I have. I'd like to know now what they are for future planning. It's either $12 or $15 a chick (silkies take forever to sex) and I'm really excited to do it!

I'm betting if the wild mallards saw you picking up their eggs each day, they'd start moving them around too...

Grit is definitely different than oyster shell, oyster shell eventually dissolves... but if they're on dirt of any kind, usually there is some kind of grit they can get to...
I always give out oyster shell or crushed egg shells on the side... some need more than others and I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and it's not there... but that's me...

That's right, thanksgiving! I already had forgotten that! Can't wait till the hatch. You have to give me all the details. What have you been running for humidity? Now that I have some grown hens around, I need to go buy some oyster shell. Surprisingly they were on the exact same food type & brand that mine are on, so no change for them there. I put FF and grit in their cage today and they picked at both. They are being very talkative across the yard, back and forth with my chickens. It's pretty comical.

His was an interesting story: I ran paper routes for 20+ years, and saw an ad posted on the bulletin board @ one of my apartment stops. I was looking for a b'day gift for my wife, & was coming up blank, so I called & made arrangements to see the dog. I pulled up & saw a lady with a JR on a lead. I spoke to the dog & knelt down to his level, the lady dropped the lead, and the dog ran up to me like a long-lost friend.  Jacks only seem to come two ways; they're either overly friendly or real ankle biters. Seems the dog actually belonged to the lady's son, but he'd moved & couldn't have a dog. He'd paid $300 for the dog as a pup, so he was obviously pure-bred (unless the son was an idiot). The lady was new in town, and in real estate sales. She was gone all day, & felt sorry for having to keep him crated all day. I took him right away. For a long time he rode with me on the paper route; he loved riding in the car. He only went after the chickens once, killing a hen. We had a very serious discussion following that indiscretion, & there was never another problem.

I like that story. Glad he ended up with you. My aunt had bought one JR puppy and she was the sweetest dog in the world. We used to joke around and call her "cat-dog" because she just wanted to lay in your lap and be pet. I used to watch her whenever they went on vacations. Best dog ever. So they decided to buy another one. A boy JR. He was a terror! He'd bite and destroy the whole house! Really wild, crazy dog. They found a farm for him to go live on, after they could not tame him. Two polar opposites.

I don't find "Chester"  (I think we are going to go with "Buster") an attractive dog, rather plain, but we are going to give him lots of love and attention and make him feel like a movie star....lol

The names are kinda similar, so I think he'll take to buster easy. I like that one better too.

a little something I came up with and have applied for a  patent on along with the tool to make them . they are 1/4 inch Styrofoam oval rings for hand turning and locking down to hatch .I got tired of the eggs rolling and also they help to keep the egg slightly tilted . they work well until they start hatching and the chicks still manage to push them out .

I've been chatting with this man that I bought the hens from, via email. He has 90-100% hatch rate on shipped eggs with a hova-bator 1588. I asked what his secret was and he said that hatching in these trays made him go from 60% up to 90-100% each batch.

Lmao!! That's probably what I would've said too. I'm kind of a gear head though. But that sounds like my dad. I grew up calling just about every car by it's year. My truck was the '86, my next truck was the '95. My dad has a Thunderbird that we call the '57 and he's got a 32 Ford 3 window coupe that we call the '32. Now that we're up in the 2000's though it kind of ruins it

I still catch myself doing it with 1 of my newer trucks. I call it either the '06 or the green truck. They're all Ford's so theres no need to distinguish make, lol. The diesel we call the 250 and we have an Excursion that we call The X. The Mustang we just call the Stang or the Mustang. If we ever get 2 trucks the same year and color I think we'd be lost

Maybe we'll call them his and hers, lol.

At one time I was a strictly Ford man...until I traded a TWH for an '89 GMC Sierra 2500...loved it.
My 1st car was a '59 Galaxy convertible; 352 mod, AT, white w/turq/white inter, white top, chrome skirts...pass anything but a gas station, & a real chick magnet. Wish now I'd kept it, along with the '68 Mustang I had.

If this is day 18, it should absorb. But I am a little concerned that the humidity may have been too high overall. What happened to the air cells on the other eggs? Some look like they have none at all.
