She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

So, I threw some feed in some water about 3 days ago, (and then forgot I did) so today I stirred it up and I don't know how "fermented" it is, it was pretty much a mash, and took some out to see how they would react. It seemed to go over quite well, so I mixed up a regular bucket and set that aside and hopefully I can remember to stir it a couple times and add water if I need to, now I just have to find something(s) big enough to put it in to feed them so more than 3 or 4 can eat at the same time.

Amy, did you notice any bubbles or like a white film on the top before stirring? I use crumbles too and I used an air tight lid at first, not knowing better and it fermented quick. I just moved up to a stainless steel pail I bought at the feed store. I try to scoop it out in the morning before stirring because I seem to get the bulk of it out then and it's less watery. I picked up this rubber pan yesterday to try because I heard it is somewhat freeze resistant. It's little giant brand and comes in all different sizes. Until now, I have also been using a dog bowl from the dollar store.

Group shot!!! One has a crooked beak, and the one with edema is fine!!! The swelling dried up and now it just has a piece of loose skin behind its leg. ;)
The lighter colored one on the left is the edema chick.

Cuties, Ross!

Hey, guise! :frow
We have 4/6 Rhode Island Reds stumbling around in the bator!  Will get pics up ASAP.  Full on red with this hatch.   Shipped aigs kinda changes thangs, mmhmm. . .

That's great! Yes, I agree, shipped eggs call for full on red! Especially since each chick that makes it ends up being a pretty expensive chick. I was so involved in my last hatch. Noting the time of each pip, assisting, etc. If I had let them be without interfering, it probably would have been a 50% hatch rather then 90%. All are healthy today, 6 wks later.

I don't know about them freeze resistant, but it's certainly easier to get ice out without getting them all banged up.. I've used them as long as I can remember; dogs, horses, goats, now chickens. You can't hurt it unless you run it over with the mower. Get a solid block frozen in?...flip 'er over & stomp on it. You'll break an ankle before you damage the pan. You can also get buckets made the same way. Highly recommended.

Good to know. Yeah, I guess freeze resistant is not accurate, huh? I've been trying to read up on winterizing. I read if you have a large piece of glass or an old window, you can prop it up, where the sun hits, put that pan behind it and it will make a greenhouse effect and the black rubber will warm up. Anyone ever try this? I can find a pic.

Ty.  How are e1 else's hatches going?  Anyone else have a bator going this late in the year?
This thread is pretty good at that:D   Velkommen!

I have an incbator runnin ;) due on the 21st, i set on Holloween

Today is the day. We go to war with the fox this aftetnoon. If y'all don't see me back on here something went terribly wrong, lol. We've stayed well away from his den, I didn't want him to be scared off by our scent and leave before we could get him. I'll update y'all again this evening. I'm not giving up til that **** fox and any others I find are dead. I'm hell bent on this.
