She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

My incubator sits right next to a light. So it's on till I go to bed. Haven't really thought about its effects on hatching. If I have early chicks, I will turn the light off to try and calm them down so they don't play egg bowling with the other eggs.
Don't worry if they seem late. I've read and talked to a local quail breeder that says she gets hatches day 19 usually, all the way to day 22.

That was actually my question. If anyone had considered the effects on hatching. I don't guess it makes any difference, but it crossed my mind.

And I have no idea when the quail will hatch. I couldn't even judge the air cells very well because those eggs are so tiny! I guess it will happen or it won't! LOL

I have a question for my chickens friends. I bought a young silkie at the show last month. She's about 12 weeks old, now. I had her inside for almost a month and just moved her outside last week. Our temps were mild in the 40's and 50's. She loved going out and is doing great! But now we are having a major cold snap! Tomorrow the temps will go down below zero. Should I move her indoors? I have an area set up in my basement. I would put another young friendly pullet with her if I do, so she's not alone. Or do you think she'll be ok?

I'm debating whether to put my plate brooder out in the coop with the sebrights this weekend. We are supposed to get close to zero, and they are supposedly fragile birds. They stay in the coop until I come out in the mornings, but they still rush out to greet me, no matter how cold it is. I'd say trust your gut, whatever you feel you need to do for her!

She's very pretty, by the way!

That looks great!
Yes! -8 to be exact. It was only 8 degrees when I woke up this morning. I just made the chickens a big bowl of hot oatmeal.
Hey, Sidewing! Good luck! I did the same thing on my last hatch. I was supposed to lock down Thursday night and I figured Friday morning would be fine and I had a pip when I was taking them out of the turner rails! I have a GLW chick. It's mom was running in a poultry show I went to. I'll have to send you pics as it grows out so you can critique it for me.
No. She was still on heat when I got her. What do you think?
You know I'm a mother hen...lol I'd be tempted to bring her in, but I agree with Bert too, if she's been accepted by the others and has someone to cuddle with she might be ok. But, I'd probably still bring her in. Not saying she'd need it, but it's just me, and I'd worry too much...lol

Does she have other birds with her?

Have they accepted her?

If no to either, I'd move her back in.

I think the plate brooder is a good idea. They say it only works from 50 and up for chicks, but I bet it would be good for the adults. At least it would give them the option, if they wanted it. I worry about them in the heat more than the cold, but we don't get the cold some of you guys do

Ive enjoyed the wuestion you posed and its replies, ill add that i use a flashlight to look for pips in the bator, it seems like they get more active when i shine them directly. If theres pips the pipe eggs start chirping and if theyre zipping they somtimes seem to get confused and stop like WTH is This?

They Will hatch! Stop that! I told you how i struggled with judging my air cells too but You got this! Weve seen the veins of life!

I have noticed the same reactions with the flashlight. Other eggs, I have been able to candle through the window, but these little eggs are too short! lol

And you are right. They will hatch! Positive vibes.

Now THAT's a silkie. Beautiful. I wish I had known more about SOP before I started getting more breeds. Breeder quality birds are so worth it in the long run, if that's your goal, because chicks really are the cheapest part of keeping chickens. Look at her compared to mine

Mine look like yours....that's why I am getting eggs from Ruby. Her silkies are beautiful and bearded.

I love the little butt the way that one of Ruby's is standing!

But you have some cute chicks there. I know Fabio is king, but have you considered adding another boy? Would it help?
