I cut mine into 4 joined cups or so, depending on what fits. I also cut the points down so more of the egg is visible. Then I set the egg on a tilt with the air cell up.

Oh, I do that too, anything to help with airflow. My hatches are way smaller than Walnut's, many times a whole carton wouldn't fit.And I use the whole bottom half (harder to tip) but cut the bottoms of the cups out so that the eggs rest on the hatcher floor. Don't know if it helps but it hasn't hurt.
Yep bottom half intact. Some folks cut the bottom out of each cell for "air exchange" I've left it whole, and poked out the bottom. Doesn't seem to make any difference IMO. In fact, when incubating in the carton, I prefer to leave the bottom intact since the carton is less fragile that way.So I'm sitting at the animal ER. I was watching the chickens outside and noticed one had something bulging out of her vent. It's rock solid and looked like poop. I soaked her in warm water and some came off and I was able to get a better look. It looks like a huge hard scab with raw tissue around it. It's bulging from inside the skin, right under the opening. Not soft but hard like cement. Her crop is empty but she's acting normal. I have a pic but no idea how to do a spoiler and it's pretty nasty. It smells horrible!!! Any ideas? We are waiting for the vet now.
Rub it in, why don't you!!![]()
Ok, I got you guys. I was thinking individual cut out cartons! You're both talking about the whole bottom half of the carton intact?

I'm afraid that's not usually good news. Salpingitis or abdominal tumor (sometimes from Marek's, sometimes reproductive). Good luck.
Same here! I've been using the brinsea mini so long that I forgot people can fit the whole carton!!
Omg...I'm never bringing a chicken to the vet again. I was so impulsive and it looked so disgusting and painful. Way to expensive!!I just don't know what I was thinking or what I expected. This is the diagnosis: "a firm growth/thickening of the bottom lip of her vent, that is secondarily necrotic and infected". She's on antibiotics, pain/anti-inflammatory meds and isolated. I already have the same exact pain meds here and I have antibiotics here already. Again, I'm an idiot! But I'm worried that if she does improve she won't be able to pass eggs with this growth in the way. I will look up the first thing you mentioned and it may be a tumor, you're right. If it was Mereks related, would the other birds get sick too?
Eta: im going to send you the pic...
I once had a vet look at me and make this complicated diagnosis about my pet: "Your cat is fat!" Duh!!!! Now, she did put it in lay-man's terms. She could have upped the charge by stating: "Your cat suffers from excess abdominal adipose tissue."I love the fact that the diagonsis is basically a statement of what you could see but in medical words, with the addition of the fact it's got puss inside.
I would have though with that description they would have recommended surgical removal and biopsy.
