She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

My duck had been in the shell and pipped for 30hrs. I noticef him moving less and less. I assisted and noticed he/she was SHRINK WRAPPED. I started to help and seen blood so I stopped and put him back in the bator with a warm wet napkin wrapped around everything exposed but his beak! NOW WHAT! I'm FREAKING!

You should try and have the beak out so it doesn't suffocate or drown. How much shell is left? Is there a yolk sac still visible?

Do you have any vaseline or antibiotic ointment w/out pain reliever in it? I would take the paper towel off, rub in some ointment or vaseline in a thin coat over the membrane to keep it soft and pliable... just make sure not to get any in its nares and let it rest... when its ready, it will push out... ducks take much longer than chickens...

I have 3 new baby ducks, all hatched yesterday/lastnight. But they're not drying out really fast due to my incubator being still air I assume. However, I've got three more getting ready to hatch. So, while we wait should I feed and water them?

You can leave them in the incubator for a while, until the others hatch, or you can pull them. Its up to you. I wouldn't put food and water in the incubator, but if you pull them out, then go ahead and introduce them to the feed and water.

Note to self: I will never, never, never break open an egg after hatch completion to check to see why they didn't hatch until 48 hours after last hatch. I killed a chick today.

Oh no!

How did the rest of the hatch go?

For some reason, my hatch recap disappeared. Here's a re-post.

I believe my hatch is complete. Of the eggs that made it to lock down: Shipment #1: 2/6 with one assist. Assist chick is doing fine, but very small. Needed to have pasty butt cleaned 3x. Shipment #2: Set 13 eggs, 12 made it to lock down. One died after pip. One bled out a bit, placed in cup, after betadine wash to umbilicus. Several assists, one with spraddle leg which has been taped. I have yet to assess the chicks left in bator. 9 hatched. My gender shaped eggs: Set 27. 19 made it to lock down. 1 assist. There may be some spraddles, and curled toes. One had yolk sac the size of a marble attached to a stem, dragging it around, with a bunch of crud stuck to it. I put it in a cup, and decided that it wouldn't get any dirtier by waiting till morning. Total survivors 11. Hatch in both bators negatively affected by temp and difficulty getting humidity up for lock down. I've learned what needs to be done to have a better grasp on humidity. Won't set in new styrobator until I've had time to problem solve temp flow throughout the box, and set up a raised platform for water trays underneath. Turkey poult egglet is still alive!

Never had such a difficult hatch. All because of temp issues, and shipping = weakened embryos, IMO! Next one will be better. I still need to assess the chicks before taking them down stairs. Have some toes to tend to, I think. But, I may wait until tomorrow to do so, since they often miraculously correct themselves with time.

So sorry to hear that, but remember, it may not have hatched anyways if it was late.

True, but at least it would have had a fighting chance. I took the rest of the non hatchers, presumed to be dead, and put them in the bator with the lone turkey poult egglet. I need to clean that bator up, but it will have to wait till I get back from an other dr appointment. I have signs of vitreous detachment that showed up last night (the last eye that had the laser surgery. The doc was much more aggressive on that eye than she was with the first one for some reason.

After reading stories like yours (and they are all over BYC, you are not alone) I always open eggs for eggtopsy just like I would do an assist by starting with a tiny hole in the air cell to look for life.

Thanks for sharing, your story may help someone else in a similar situation.

Hope your eye heals well! Good luck at the doctors.
