She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

After reading stories like yours (and they are all over BYC, you are not alone) I always open eggs for eggtopsy just like I would do an assist by starting with a tiny hole in the air cell to look for life.

Thanks for sharing, your story may help someone else in a similar situation.

Hope your eye heals well! Good luck at the doctors.

x2 on all counts!

(I did it to the first one I ever opened)

I had three of my ducklings hatch lastnight. Two of them are up and seem strong and healthy. The third has been laying down all morning. I just went and checked and it foamed yellowish tinted clear liquid from nostrils and mouth. He seems very weak. But they are all still in the bator. Havent been given any food at all. Im sure they can get water from the sponges I ude for humidity but that's it! What's going on and what should I do? I REALLY don't want he/she to die. :(

How many do you have left and what is going on with the rest? For me, this determines my course of action with ones once they hatch.

Yellowish liquid from the nostrils would concern me though, so I would very likely pull that duckling out.

I just looked at him and its like he scraped the top of his beak during hatching or something. I got lukewarm water and put his beak in it to maybe clear it up and it seemed to help but he's still weak. The other two are playing and chirping away!

Note to self: I will never, never, never break open an egg after hatch completion to check to see why they didn't hatch until 48 hours after last hatch. I killed a chick today.
Awe. That sucks! Sorry!

Was there gooey or sticky liquid in the shell it hatched from?

If it's from breathing in gooey/sticky resdidue in the shell, taking it out would not be the best idea... the gooey/sticky stuff hardens as soon as dry air hits it... if it's in the lungs it will 'crystalize' them...

And i wouldn't say so. All of them had all their yolks absorbed and there was like nothing left in the shell at all except a greyish funky ball looked like poop or something but i figured it was normal.
