So someone from Australia posted in one of the other chicken websites that if you laid the chick down on his back in the palm of your hand and the chick retracted both legs, it is a hen, if it retracted one leg and extended the other, it was a rooster.

Try it. Surely an Aussie wouldn't put us on, would they?

What if it extended both legs?

wow, ill have to get her to try that.
This lady really needs help with this, and she is my landlord so Id really like to try.
Pretty please at least have a shot at this!!

That bird is way too young to tell if its a boy or girl. Try posting a new pic in a few weeks.

Several of my 1 week olds had their tail feathers coming in while most of them didn't. I asked if it were an early indication of sex and was told no.

It would've been nice if that could be the case, but pretty soon all the other chicks will have tails like that, too.

I am a newbie here so please take this at face value I just got my first day old chicks in early Nov but I had read somewhere about cockerels getting their tails later I watched carefully and the last one toi get tail feathers I marked and low and behold he is the bloke at 7 weeks he even tries (not very well) to crow, and protect his girls.

Thanks, Yes, these are hylines at 4 weeks old and half of them dont have a tail and the rest have one.
I know some breeds are easy to sex because of the tail.
I dont breed standards: just silkies and ducks so im in the dark here.

There are some breeds in which the girls feather out quicker than the boys, but they have to be bred for that.
I'm not sure which breeds are which!
