Hello everyone, I'm brand new here. And new to chickens. It's been a bumpy road but not too unusual from what I've heard. Anyway, I have this one juvenile,Black Copper Marans who is always kind of a mess but she seems sturdy and vigorous. I think she is rumpless and her butt usually has stuff hanging off it. I hope she will lay normally. Her feet have feathers growing on them which looks odd (and they are big, she is big) but I guess that is standard for the breed. I'm concerned because she frequently blows a bubble out of her one nostril. Her nose doesn't really run and her eyes are good (I think.) She has been doing this for weeks and the others don't show any signs of the same. I haven't heard her sneeze but my daughter says she did once.

Is it possible that she will just get over it like it's a cold? These kinds of things with chickens often lead to other bad things ...so I'm wondering if I should treat her with something.

She is a very funny looking and sort of bossy, indelicate bird- kind of endearing actually. They really DO have personalities just like everyone said. And from the start.

Thanks for any of your ideas.

If "her butt constantly has stuff hanging off of it "- what is it ? Is it dried poo, or worms or ???? If she is getting pasty butt (plastered poo) she needs to have that washed off.

She sounds like she has a respiratory infection. Please post her symptoms in detail on the "emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread where someone with more experience may determine what she has and how to treat her.

Thanks for your response. It's mainly a little dried poo or wood shavings- I've looked to see if it's what they describe as pasty and I've bathed her to wash it off. She seems to poop fine, some of it just gets stuck on her feathers sometimes.

Thanks for the suggestion of posting to the diseases, etc thread...I'll look for it.

! Pleased you joined us! I think drumstick has given you some good advice. Good luck to you and your birds!

Regarding your girls "messy butt", does she roost at night or is she sleeping in a nesting box or on a flat surface? I have one hen with a constant messy butt but she has a habit of not wanting to roost. She finds a flat surface to sleep on and manages to poo all over herself during the night. Keep an eye on where/how she's sleeping as that might be the reason for her untidy rear.
