There's someone nearby that raises them, but I don't. The sale barn pays the most for solid black steers. Anything with spots is heavily discounted (and spots is dominant as far as crossbreeding goes). Otherwise I would have a few, just cause they're so pretty.
One of these days I'm gonna get around to changing my avatar pic to one of my own animals. Back when I first joined BYC I didn't know how to upload pics from my camera to my computer so I picked this adorable pic off of the internet...
I just bought a shorthorn bull to save my red herd because otherwise we breed to black. Funny thing though: last year's black bull threw everything from red and white patterned to black, but only about 15% black. I think there's a shortage of real Angus bulls out there after all the "Black Angus Beef" branding.
Sounds like your black bull wasn't homozygous black!
We had a Black Angus x Braunvieh bull for a while. He was black, and the cows were black, but we'd still get plenty of color! Most of the calves were black with a hint of brown here and there, some were midnight black, some were solid red, some were red brindle, and some closely resembled a Braunvieh, except they were black where a purebred Braunvieh would be that mousy brownish grey color. The bull also had very high libido mixed with a low respect of fencing and gates, which is not a great combination, LOL. He also threw mostly heifer calves (boys are worth more), so for these reasons we finally sold him last year. I do miss him though, he'd let you walk right up to him and pet him. It always made an impression on city friends when I'd walk right up to a 2,000 pound bull and pet him.
He also had a beautiful super fine and sleek summer coat that showed every muscle rippling when he walked. He was gorgeous!
