She's not a She

When we first decided to get chooks, I told the kids the hens would be for eggs and the roosters would be for meat. 11-year-old DS said he didn't think he could do that. I told him if he wasn't willing to eat our own humanely produced meat, then he shouldn't eat store-bought chicken either. After all, it was once a live bird and almost certainly lived a miserable life whereas we would know that ours had a good life and were killed humanely. He thought on that for a bit and then decided it would be okay. We processed three roos a couple of weeks ago and both of my kids enjoyed the resultant meals very much. They wanted to know who we were eating tonight, and we all said a little "thank you" before tucking in. It felt entirely respectful and gave the kids a real appreciation for what goes into the food that they eat. Perhaps your kids will come around?

Also, since chickens are social animals, have you considered what to do about getting a companion for your "giant" cochin after the Australorp is gone?
