~Shipped Egg Early Spring Hatch-a-Long~

Just found this thread.

I'm on day 19 of my first ever batch of shipped eggs. 12 Standard Cornish and 11 BCM. I bought a single araucauna egg locally as my "control" (really wanted a handful but that was all they had).

I have lost a ton of the SC along the way. I think there are only 2 that are realistically going to hatch. I removed 4 of them yesterday going into lock down that were totally clear. I elected to leave a bunch of "prob not going to hatch" eggs in there as well. The Marans are faring better... maybe 6 that will hatch. The lonely blue egg looks the best... I'm almost certain its going to pip first.

The only boneheaded thing I did was that I didn't have the sense to mark the eggs when I candled them yesterday. Going to do it again tonight and mark them so I know which ones I'm expecting to do well, unless someone has already pipped. Also, I know I have a saddle air cell that I need to keep an eye on... shame on me for not remembering to mark them all yesterday!

Shipped eggs are tough. Stinks because down here in Oz there are a really limited number of breeds unless you buy shipped eggs. Maybe I'll get lucky. I just hope I get some pullets out of this!

Good luck to you all, hopefully we will all have some chooks by this weekend!

Aw what cuties! Congrats on them!

I had two hatch yesterday. 1 Buff Silkie and 1 Splash Silkie! The Splash is a little weak, but the Buff is a crazy little one! They hatched about 7 minutes apart! I call them the twins! :p
The other 2 eggs don't look good. I candled this AM to make sure everything was okay. No movement and no internal pips. I'll wait it out one more day, but it looks like it's just the twins this round!

So glad I recandled last night... I had a stink bomb in there!!!!! The smell in the bator was awful, found the offending egg, and got it out of there.

4 BCM, 2 SC, 1 Araucauna left that I think have a chance. The others are pushed to the back and marked with an X.

I'm a little worried that the air cell on the Araucauna isn't big enough. Its def smaller compared to the other eggs... problem is I have no idea how big it was to start with as it was a super fresh egg and only sat for 48h before going into the incubator. I really struggled with candling the darker pigmented eggs in the beginning. Realistically- what the heck am I going to do about it now right?

Day 20, haven't seen any movement at all yet. Also to add insult to injury we lost power one night (for up to 6h) and the incubator got cold, so from what I read they probably won't hatch until Sun-Mon anyway.

Congrats to those of you who had little peeps born!

Here are the only two chicks that hatch from my batch of 23 eggs. Of the 20 shipped legbar egg s only one hatched. Looks like it is a boy, has a spot in the head. The other one is from one of my EE hens.

Yes, she has nice colors and puffy cheeks.
Both of them are under a hen now. I just put both of them under one of my game hens and removed the fake eggs I had in her nest. She is a good momma and i won't have to keep them in the brooder.
