Shocker Price for Feed

One thing to keep in mind is that feed costs go up for everyone. I'm already seeing chicken more expensive at the market and the price of eggs will go up. So it will cost more to feed your birds, but what they give you in eggs and meat will be more valuable.

Cattle prices are still high in Oregon. Hay crop is just coming in. it looks gorgeous, but first cutting is late due to the cold spring that got planting delayed. It's possible that there will be fewer cuttings and less hay. I haven't seen hay for less than $250 a ton for a couple of years now and don't expect it to go down.

I went to ur local feed store today to check on other types of grain and what they sold, but was very surprised to find out that they sold FR for 17.50 -50lbs. so went ahead and got another bag, I won't be going to the feed store I went to yesterday again for feed thats for sure. These stores are about 25 miles apart and probably have the same truck deliver and look at the price difference. 21.50 -17.50 good grief.

That's terrible yet, not all that surprising. We are picking up feed this afternoon should be interesting to see if the price is the same. I should call my feed supply i get my horses grain from and inquire on there pricing for feeds, they are an organic feed supply so that is why i have to go to another get my purina flock raiser...

So till my feed store orders wheat and millet for me, I went and bought some organic wheat at the bulk part of my grocery store, pretty pricey but want to see if my ducks/chickens would even eat it, well today I mixed in Blk oil sunflowers seeds. whole oats, wheat and FR and my goodness they dove in like they hadn't eaten in months, Thanks to Celtic Oak Farms for giving us an idea on what else we can feed to our flock. Hopefully this will also help us when the price of feed goes up even more by mixing various grains together we maybe able to keep the cost down somewhat and keep our flocks healthy too.

I mainly use just cracked corn and give them treats like watermelon to add to nutrition, but I went out today to find it went up 1 doller for the first time... and whole corn stayed the same. Im hopeing it dont go up from there I know its only one dollar..... for now at least. And the price hike could be from all the recalls they have been having.

Quote: ive been trying to find a simple to mix (ratio and just a handful of grains) that works well nutritionally. This is the best I could come up with as a balance of ease and nutrition. Equal parts of the following giving an 18.5% protein level and decent vit mix

corn
Field peas
crimped oats
ground whole wheat
sunflower

Corn is like feeding your waterfowl bags of candy. The only time it is recommended is in very cold climates in the winter. It is not a complete nutrition and shouldnt be the only feed on a daily basis. Corn only packs on the fat making an unhealthy duck/goose. Excess fat also decreases fertility.

I think the hardest thing for a lot of people is that they are getting bad information from the feed store. When I moved up to AL, my closest feed store looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for unmedicated chick starter. The only unmedicated feed they had was layer ration. They then told me that around here people just feed their ducks cracked corn and did not understand why I would by feed for them. But they also thought I was crazy for having muscovy.

Another local store, same thing.

The people I got my muscovy from here would free range and give them dog food and some scratch in the evening.

Many of the people where I live (VERY small town and rural) don't think that you should have to go to the expense of feeding livestock (particularly birds) and just supplement what the animals find on their pasture.

Corn is cheap, relatively speaking and makes birds large albeit fat.

So, I have to drive an extra 15 miles to get to TSC for what I want.
