I have had heel spurs so I bring slippers with me to houses with the no shoe rules. My Son is handicapped and it is very difficult for him to remove his shoes and get them back on but people understand and don't make a fuss over his being on. If I did not like your rule I simply would find another place to rent. Glad these tenants will be gone soon. Good luck with the next ones.

The whole renting market is a mess. Shoes on in the house is probably the least of my worries if I rented to someone. However, it is your house. I personally wouldn't rent from someone who wanted such rules even though I don't usually wear shoes in the house.

I rent out rooms to tenants. I'm Japanese, and I make it very clear before they move in that outdoor shoes are not to be worn inside the house. If you didn't like that rule, would you move in? If you did move in, would you follow the rule, ignore the rule or sneak around it? I have had two tenants now who seem to think that this is an optional rule, and I'm trying to understand, hence the poll.

I have no problem wearing shoes in my house but if I were to visit someone's house who didn't like shoes to be worn in it, I would have no problem taking mine off outside the front door.

For me, the purpose of footwear, is protection of my feet.
I typically wear work boots outside my place (we have thorn trees that drop two inch thorns all over and I do my own welding and other metal work).
I usually wear my riding boots if I go out anywhere, because I use a motorcycle.
I have a pair of "flip flops" that are for house use only. They give me the closest feeling to being barefoot, without standing on cold stone floors in my place. Not a stretch at all, to leave outside footwear at the door.
