shotgun experts-need advice*pics added*

Love my old model 12 (1912). Depending on what the issue is, you might be able to just purchase the new firing pin and replace it. Generally there is a retaining screw that needs to be removed so that you can remove the firing pin. Order a new one, drop it in place, replace the retaining screw, and start shooting again.

Some retaining screws are staked (hit with a center punch on the edge) to keep them in place, so the use of the proper screwdriver bit is important.

If that is all it is, you should be good to go, and it should not cost $400.

Is there a local skeet or trap range where you are at? Try there when they have a large competition, as a lot of trap guys shoot model 12's, and there would likely be someone there who would have aftermarket parts.

you need to get it checked for what shells it can chamber as well. shells have gotten longer over the years. you can buy firing pins from the manufacturer modern barrels too. if you can't replace them yourself, they was a military grade model made. most korea or vietnam vets could probably field strip it and replace it for you.

Please post pics of the gun, just for us who want a peek at it. Close up of the barrels, if they are damascus!

Damascus barrels were long gone by 1925. I think the 1897 pump was the last they made.

But I'm confused: you say the shotgun is a Model 12, but it has two barrels? You mean two separate barrels, or a side-by-side double? The Winchester Model 12 was a pump, and any competent gunsmith can repair it; parts are still readily available. But if you mean a Model 21, which was a double-barrel side-by-side (although I don't think they started making them until the early 1930s), then you need to find a gunsmith who specializes in double guns. More good (for which read valuable) doubles have been ruined by the neighborhood gunsmith "who can fix anything" than you can begin to count.

If it's a model 21, I want it! I have two model 12's. They are both 12 ga, but wonderful guns. My cousin has two model 12's in 16 ga. He uses them all the time. The M12 is one of the best engineered pump shotguns ever made.

onthespot -they are not Demascus but here are some pics anyway.

Ahab-2 seperate barrels-sorry for the confusion.i have taken it to 3 different gunsmiths and they said that they couldn't fix it.just diplay it.the closest was a guy in MO for $400.i will have all the facts for the gunsmith but from what i heard it is very dangerous with that firing pin.something was done to accept the longer cartridges of today.

Newbie in Screamer Al, -please PM me the info just in case.

jhm47-dinately a model-12 16g.the great great grandfather used it to put food on the table and i would love for my 4yo to be able to use it someday.

Length of the shell has nothing at all to do with the firing pin.

The length of the CHAMBER is what matters, and it should be marked on the barrel.
Most likely it only shoots 2 3/4 inch shells.

If it's been modified from the original chambering, it's probably not truly safe no matter what you do
