Should feed stores etc... even sell chicks????

I like to see minimums to prevent lonely chicks, but I'd prefer a limit of 3. Some of us only keep 3 or 4 chooks at a time in urban areas.

Maybe we, who know what we're getting into, should leave our name & # and take these unwanted babies off their hands when they return them?
I know I would make a trip into town to pick up unwanted babies. Just sayin'

I think this post is funny. Today my DD went to tractor supply to look for one thing for another byc member who can't find it in their area. While there she checked what chicks they had, since I had just lost my 5 to a dog attack. They had as their breed of the week SLW like the 2 that I lost, so DD comes and gets me we walk out the store with 7 new little chicks no feed nothing that is already at home set up waiting. All 7 are now tucked into their brooder with water and food. I think sometimes what something might look like isn't always the case the guys working today really seemed nice and helpful even let us pick the chicks we wanted. I am glad that they have a minimum number its the law here no less then 5 chicks can be sold tractor supply has a 6 chick minimum which is fine it stops most people from buying the impulse chicks. I think everyone had great post and each person who buys chicks does so in a different way which is great it gives everyone a lot of different ideas that might work for some one else.

The other problem with minimums is that some folks, such as myself, are looking for specific breeds for variety. I drove to a feed store 100 miles away because they had the 2 breeds I wanted in the same shipment. I called 8 feed stores closer to see what they were getting in. I might have just as easily purchased one chick from them and the rest from another feed store if that's how it worked out.

Now someone watching me walk out would think 'what an idiot, only buying one chick'. I try not to judge anyone because I don't know what their experience level is and what their situation is. I think most everybody has a pretty good handle on things given the fact that we all make mistakes from time to time.

First off....this post is not meant toward anyone....I understand fully what was said in previous posts....but as I sit here....I am thinkin'.....and I just wanted to post my funny thought...that happened to cross my mind....

My 80's style hair do, yeppers big and lotsa hairspray, not a hair outta place, make up is ever so carefully applied....Oh yeah, I slip on my bib overhalls that are a bit to large and showing some age, pull on my knee-highs.....get my high heels on....grab my ever so 'spensive bag, carefully place on my staw hat...oh, and the shades (oh yeah..the big round ones)...gotta have them....out the door I go....to hop in my new little sporty car...to TSC I go....gotta get my baby peeps with all the fixin's.....!!!

Seriously....I meant to aim this at no one....just my crazy blonde head.....and a funny thought for sure!!!!

Please take no offense, but enjoy it for what it trully is....a funny thought!!!!
Have a great day all!!!

I wish my old bibs were baggy, maybe you should change this to 'wedge in to the ol' bibs, yeah, cuz I'm sure 2 sizes too small is the new fashion..'

I agree with you, I went with my cousin to 2 different TSC's where we called ahead of time and had them hold the last of the white leghorn pullets. We walked out of each store with just one chick. She has 20 chicks in a brooder at home, but also wanted white leghorns.
Bottom line, you have no idea what people are doing and what they have already at home.

Yeah, I have gone to the feed store to buy 2 chicks and none of the 'fixings' because I had the brooder all set up full of other chicks, and I didn't even take a box for these chicks I just let my little sister hold them for the ride (10 min) so to someone else it must have looked awful I just walk in, buy 2 chicks and hand them to a 9 year old with no food, water, box etc.

OP: I understand why you are upset about the ignorant people starting with chicks and nothing else, it is frustrating. People have called me to buy chicks asking if they will be okay sleeping with the dog!

LOL...that's exactly what you're doing...right in the next sentence denying profiling. I'm not upset or anything, it's just amusing.

I carry a Coach bag into my TSC because it's my purse. Don't judge. Last time I went to the TSC was after a Sunday brunch...so I was even in heels! *gasp*

I also think the like is true....people who don't have a pot to pee in who buy chickens likely understand the incredible renewable food resource they are tapping.

Once I went after a Jewelry trade show, I was wearing a chiffon duster, lots of pearls, and heels I must have looked odd.
