Should I be irritated triple the charge for shipping the eggs?

Well they replied right away "Because of the time and gas it takes to drive roundtrip and pack them etc. LOL, so I guess that's my answer. Maybe they're right. I can understand that even though I don't think in those terms. Maybe if I did, I'd be richer LOL1

First, you should have asked about combining shipping cost before you place your bid. Technically he didn't have to combine any shipping. I am shocked he sent them in such a small box. Did the seller ask for your zip code? He would have been able to find out how much it was going to cost to ship to you. There really wasn't any reason why he couldn't have just charged the one shipping cost and still made some money, without gouging you. I never use anything less than the 12x12x8.5" priority mail box. It doesn't bother me if a seller makes a few extra dollars to cover their pkging expenses and gas to the PO. The problem with leaving the bad feedback is, the seller put everything in his ad and the cost. It is up to the buyer not to bid if you don't like the terms. I always contact buyers before I bid on anything and look at their feedback comments. You can get a feel for how they are going to operate. It is a shame he charged you the way he did, but he did list the cost of what he was charging up front.

since ebay changed their feedback system I don't know if they still have the ebay community, but they did have a place you could dispute shipping charges if they were inflated.

I'm not going to leave bad feedback because I may buy more eggs from that person if they aren't to be found elsewhere. They had a color variation I haven't been able to find except on Eggbid and I can't get Eggbid to send me a password so I can register so, so much for that. And yes, I was aware of the shipping they were going to charge me regardless and was willing to pay that before the auction ended so I guess I shouldn't be miffed. I just wasn't happy to see that $5 label glaring at me. I had messaged them about it and that I was in the same state and fairly close. I do agree it falls on me.

they listed the cost upfront and that's fine. they don't break down the shipping and handeling though so you are trusing them that they are not ripping you off on the handeling part. I'm not buying the gas excuse. He had to give you some reason. I don't happen to believe this one is a valid one. At the very least I would leave a neutral review. state the facts. all you have to do is break down the shipping and handeling charge in the review and express your opinion that even though the seller said the excess charge was for gas that you think it was still excessive.

Yes, that also makes sense. I'm going to "brood" over it for a few days and if I'm still hot about it, I will leave neutral feedback but probably I won't. I'm not forced to buy from that seller again so I can consider it a lesson learned.

Well, the shipping was stated and by placing a bid the buyer agreed to that shipping cost. What apparently wasn't covered was that the shipment was going to be made in what sounds like substandard packaging. Thankfully the eggs didn't have to travel from east to west coast...it was also fortunate that the box didn't get drop-kicked by someone on a shipping dock.

In the future I would inquire about shipping methods including box and packing materials/methods used. Having everything known up front keeps feelings of being overcharged or mislead to a minimum. Sounds like the shipper wasn't very concerned about the survival of the eggs, though. He/she might have some eggs you're interested in but I would definitely be hesitant to trade with them again if I were you.

Right, wrong, or indifferent the seller did indicate what the shipping fee would be. Can't comment on the packaging, but the eggs did arrive in good shape. Maybe just a case of buyer beware next time?

There are plenty of sellers who will jack up the price of shipping and reduce the price of the product. IMO you have to figure in the price of shipping + price of product as the actual item cost. Ebay only gets commission on the purchase price which the buyer pays at a later date but makes nothing off of the shipping. It's cheaper for the seller to charge more for shipping.

I don't mind it provided I know exactly what the total cost will be and I'm still ok with it. I'm looking at a security camera on ebay. Shipping is 93.00 the price of the camera is 24. The camera is worth about 100. When ebay fees went up this became the common thing to do. It's illegal according to ebay rules because they don't make as much money.

I charge a flat fee of $15 shipping for 12+ eggs. Last year and this year my shipping cost has averaged right around $13 per box. That includes delivery confirmation. That gives me about $2 per box of eggs to pay for the bubble wrap, tape and to pay for my time to wrap them and drive the almost 20 mile round trip into town to the PO.

It doesn't sound like he wrapped that well and it does seem a bit much for the small box, but since the amount for shipping was stated in his auction I think you just have to chalk this one up to experience.
