Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I got a dozen eggs today! Hubby came home and worked on the nest boxes again this evening. Hopefully they will be finished tomorrow if it isn't snowing/raining! After that we have to put the wire up and boards along the bottom (to keep them and the litter out of the wall cavities) , fix the screen door in between, the pop door, and the roosts!

New roost per tha astute observation of W4W! It's much higher than the old one which worried me that they wouldn't be able to reach it!
No worries tho! And now they can't clothesline themselves either...the other one was too low.

Hey, Chicken Steve with a question, My girls are starting to lay eggs again after winter and a good molt. I've got some good ones but this morning one of my girls layed a soft shelled egg. This is her second year laying so i'm not sure what is going on. so I got some oyster shell and put out for them, and am starting a spouted barley fodder, just in the shorter grass of around two to three inches in height. It's just got me bothered about the soft shelled egg ?? any help.

Hi MC!

Where ya been hiding? Been wondering about you and OK too. Hope all is well.

Sadly, my new Silkie was just faking us out. Not broody. Cold eggs this morning. Toyed with the idea of trying to hatch the eggs with a make shift incubator. Messed around a bit today with a few ideas and decided to skip hatching for now. Too many other things around here need doing and I sure don't need more distractions.

3 days of rain on the way. Happy about that, but there will be some frustrated chickens around. I stocked up on some cabbages to hang in the big girls' run. Edible tether ball!

Howdy Chicken Steve. If it's just the one soft egg, I wouldn't worry, probably just getting her system back in gear. Oyster shell is good to keep out all the time, they'll help themselves and use what they need.

Last summer, I had a gold sex link that was laying really thin shells and the occasional soft shell. Most of her eggs got broken on the nest. Gave her a little extra vitamin D because I thought she might be having trouble absorbing calcium into her system. Seemed to help. So far this year she is back to normal.

The PIE situation was" the straw that broke the chickens back"........but we have not had any bugs for months now. And I have forgot what a watermelon looks like. You know I am expecting in July. So we need a balanced diet.

I figured it was this serious. As soon as I get off the phone with Mother Nature asking for some more "bug friendly" weather I will start calling produce suppliers in South America to see if I can get a watermelon on the next flight to Kentucky. So hold off on the "peacock screaming" until I get off the phone please.

Oh poor Rodger!!! I had to stop giving the girls watermelon in the winter because my little silkie makes such a mess she dribbles juice down the entire front of her neck. I worried about her catching a chill like that w this weather. She'll be so happy to get them again too!!!!

Supposedly this polar vortex is killing of the stink bug population. There is an up side!!

I let the girls free range yesterday for the first time. They only stayed outside the run for a few minutes before they scuttled inside. One of the BCM and silkies couldn't figure out how to get back in... It was cute in a funny way. I could see them start to panick so I had to walk behind them to show them that if they walked all the way around they'd find the door.
