Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I have a question for you guys... what is your opinion on Black Copper Marans? Good layers? Personality?

I want a colorful egg and something that would fit well with my girls. Thanks!!

I obviously have no experience with them. The breeder I got my ameracauna eggs from breed marans as well. Their eggs are gorgeous!

I just came up from tucking the hooligans in for the night. Since they are under a light, they don't really sleep at night like I suppose they would if it was dark. I can tell they're going to spill their water tonight. They haven't yet but I suspect it might happen before dawn. I gave them a bit of sod that I dug out of the frozen ground this morning. Just 2-3 square inches with some dirt and grass, figured it would give them something to do. After being extremely wary of it for several hours, they started in on it. A small leaf was extracted and they are having a great time playing keep away with it. When the game really gets going, after half of them start cheeping AS LOUD AS THEY CAN while the one with the leaf does laps around the box. Eventually someone else grabs it and hurtles around the obstacle course made up of the feeder and waterer. Extra points if the "it" chick can get some lift by flapping its wings as it runs.

Pretty entertaining to watch, if not messy.

Maybe tomorrow I will give them PIE! It's their one week birthday after all. A bit of crumbled boiled egg yolk probably totally counts as PIE to them...

Had a conversation with my breeder tonight. In which I complained they simply were not feathering out fast enough! It's been a week after all!

I have hatchery quality BCM. No eggs yet but I like their personality. They're pretty calm. Mine are talkers tho!!

I have 3 Marans. one Cuckoo, the other 2 are Marans crosses - but crossed with other Marans. one looks like Lemon Maran x Cuckoo, the other Copper mixed with Cuckoo... they are lovely girls, not flighty, not mean, moved up the ranks because they're not pushovers, even Esther, who is a bantam... all 3 are good layers, started laying near the 6 month mark, the LF a bit earlier, I love them. I say go for it. the eggs do not start out super dark right off the bat. it takes about 2 months and you'll notice the change.

temps near the 40° mark today, but snow is expected this afternoon. then we're plunged back into the cold temps for another whole week, with more snow Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. with single digits overnight. in 7 days tho', they expect temps to finally rise back to the 40's and stay there. it had better... I have 3/8 of a tank left fuel-wise. I cannot budget in another tank. off to work! have a great day everyone!
