Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Hey guys! Its been crazy around here! There are chicks every where and trying to keep the peace is a major task. Momma is very protective and there has been lots of flogging! Even Paisley has gotten it! Other than a couple of hens everyone leaves everyone else alone. I'm still having low egg numbers and they have been confined to the run unless I am outside. Bitty laid today for the first time since she was broody. I'm wondering if she is going to do like last time and lay 2 dozen then go broody again. We will have to wait and see.

okay, I am marking here that I need to return to page 1324 tomorrow to catch up. I'm wiped. it was a fantastic day, but no chicks yet.

Peach is resolutely sitting. her breast was ruffling funny when I got back from a pizza break so I was hopeful, but she was just shuffling. I did take some nice photos that I will share tomorrow. double routes so I must get some rest...

goodnight* 21 Eggs today

My husband has seen it. The neighbors have seen it. My B-I-L and S-I-L have seen it. I have not. Then tonight a neighbor was over, and I saw it. Finally!!!! I got to see Thanksgiving display!!

He has been doing it for a while (so I am told). I am guessing as the alpha, he didn't want to do it in front of me. I hope to have a camera, and catch it next time. I may need to get the help of someone else. Seriously, if after all this time (over a month) I haven't seen it. I don't think he will just happen to do it for me to see. You all know what happens when you buy a dozen eggs.

Here is hoping I just jinxed it so he will start doing it when I am around!
The neighbor swore he gobbled for her. I don't think so. The Bourbons gobble all the time (but for me!). He has never said a word. I think she was hearing the Bourbons tonight. She is mentally slow (like an 8-y-o on a good day). I can't trust her.
Anyway, I will share a picture of my biggest pumpkin and cucumber (that isn't hidden by leaves anyway) then I need to get to sleep. Night!

This is probably my favorite of all the pics I took today.
Awwww, what a cutie! I noticed tonight that my 15 wk old black Australorp's wattles are suddenly doubled and red, so I opened a couple nest boxes and put a golf ball in one and a plastic Easter egg in the other. I've heard so many stories of them waiting until 24 wks or later that I didn't get my hopes up... but maybe she'll surprise us! :D Crossing fingers and being skeptical at the same time.

Just realised that my little girls are 19 weeks today! They seem so much smaller than my layers that the thought of them laying hadn't crossed my mind yet. I'm so excited now!! Hoping to get some blue eggs. Fingers crossed

Quote: x2, she is stunning! and so glad you had fun despite the outrageous temps!

I think someone is going to lay within the next 2 weeks so I don't think layer would hurt that one but I suspect my ameraucanas will hold out longer maybe even a month or more so I didn't want to give them later. I am sure the oyster shell will be fine.

Very pretty sceambles!
it's a good time to make the switch. get layer feed. your Ameraucana won't lay for a while yet, (based on the pic...) but she can still eat it. it's under 16 weeks that they should have finishing/grow out feed...

so glad you got to see it! one of my customers has a Bourbon Red that displays for me, and I love it! I'd have to spend too much time searching for a photo now... but I've got some real winners! love the garden!

my December chicks had me so fooled, they didn't look anywhere near ready and I was finding more eggs than I had layers... still didn't hit me until I collected 3 blue eggs in one day when I thought I only had 1 blue egg layer... any second now!!! lol

heading out RIGHT NOW to check on Peach. had to have some coffee first...

nuttin. Gossamer was up, bathing... but gave me stink eye like I've never seen and feather footed it back to her eggs. I felt around Peach and lifted her slightly. I definitely know there are 8 eggs under her. she did reject one egg last week, which brought her down to 9... she's got them tucked everywhere, so there may still be 9. this is crazy. I will have to candle them when I get home tonight. I hate to disturb them.

What?! No chicks yet??? What the heck! I know those silly ameraucanas won't be laying for a while...besides wanting to torture me, they are fancy breeder birds which tend to lay later than hatchery birds according to my reading.
