Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

When I was selling off my flock this past spring, I had to keep my RSL. The one was in a bad molt, so there was that excuse (you have to keep them in pairs at least!) but the real reason was her sister. She is the one that at 3-days-old, escaped either the brooder (maybe with the help of a cat) or during free range (on the day my profile picture was taken). She turned up 3 days later across the yard by the layer pen. With hawks, dogs, cats, etc, and the motorcycle (Oh my gosh we rode through the grass so many times that week!) she managed to stay warm, hydrated, and alive!! She is now the one that runs inside when everyone runs out because I am in the coop cleaning. She investigates the pile I am working on, sits on the roost while I am cleaning under it, and leans wayyyy down. She has even sat on the rake! She is just too funny to sell.
We finally got a good rain tonight. Tomorrow is going to be bad though. We are expecting hail. My mother is coming to see me. She is retired now. She is making the rounds to her 7 children. Fortunately, we only span from N.J. (north and south) to Ohio (in the town she decided to retire in). I can't say I am excited, but it is my punishment for being born.

I hope she gets here before it gets too bad.
I may need to put the BBW in the big coop with the chickens. Not ideal, but if their pen gets blown apart...

Lindz- your comets are definitely not.84th gen lol. That particular hybrid is made by crossing 2 breeds...I think usually a rir and something white I can't remember.. maybe Leghorn? They are all 1st gen because to make them they have to do the cross. Second gen is when you put a comet and a comet. Apparently the good traits of the comets don't breed true and the second gen can be a bit of a mess. I retreating reading. If you got hours from a hatchery they are first gen.

No eggs.

Today I prepared a breakfast feast for two (hubby is "working" from home) of duck eggs that a friend brought me from the UP. Her bf's family have chickens (and ducks, apparently) and she felt sorry for me and brought me 16 fresh chicken eggs and 4 fresh duck eggs. They were delicious.

I knew I didn't need the chicken eggs, though. She has easter eggers and sure they were super cute and all, but not needed since I knew this morning I would find 6 darling eggs in my next box. I told hubby I was going out to collect the eggs. He asked if I wanted to take an egg carton with me, but I decided I would carry them in a makeshift pouch made from the bottom of my shirt instead. I stopped at the run door to greet the girls and peer around the run to make sure no one laid anything in there. Sure enough, only thing they laid in the run is poop. Super, all the eggs were laid in the coop.

I peered through the window of the coop. No eggs in the shavings. Awesome! They all hit the next on the first try. I went around to the egg door, getting ready to feel those still-warm oblong treasures in my greedy little hands....

2 eggs today. Titleists. One in each box. Completely undisturbed.

Mortie and I both have defective chickens! My girls love laying in the nest boxes during the day. To make everything more comfortable for themselves they move the golf balls out so they don't have to lay on them. At this point I think the ducks are going to lay before the chickens do. I wonder now if I would have been better off getting RIR's instead of the red sex links. I don't know?!?
