Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

YAY for squatting!

Boo for egg eating!

welcome-byc.gif
and the thread to the new comers!

Bitty has been hanging out in the nest for most of the day, and she was in there again tonight!!!!! But she did lay today, so I'll probably give her a couple more days to see if she's serious again! Apparently she is going to lay a dozen and go broody! She's laid 10 since she started laying again.... (12 the first time before she went broody!) The only problem is that she is TINY, and can only cover 3-4 normal size eggs.... Oh well, she is a good momma even if she is the lowest in the pecking order... And I got 10 eggs today, which is the most I've gotten in nearly a month! WOO HOO!

mortie, they don't always keep squatting for me once they've matured, a few do a little, and Wilma really does. I get the full exposed vent and she wants a full body massage. cracks me up, but it's hard to photograph by myself (I get the vent end...) but she's so cute, puffs all her feathers and plants her face in the grass... she loves being scritched and scratched under her wings and around her hackles. I'm glad she still does this, she's been doing it since she was a wee chick. first time she puffed up for me was about 1 month. cutest thing I had ever seen!

and yeah, today was brutal, some 700 stops. I shot my brakes.

we are done our new coop, DH took 3 nests from camper coop and put them in new one, last night we were talking and i told him we have so many nest in the camper so why not take the wood ones we made and move to new coop, he must have liked that idea as when i got up at 7 he already had them moved around, we have the large metal thing that has about 20 nest in it and last night i went out to close up and one of the chicks got between the window and the fan was yelling she could not find her way back out, they keep getting up on top of nest roof to sleep even tho it is slated. so he took the roof off to move it, guess he is going to leave it off, we are cleaning the yard up this past week, got small cage that we use for peeps out of his shop and on its side in garage, got shed i keep the hey in all cleaned up we are down to 2 bales of it, had 8 in there at one time, i used a lot in the new coop then cleaned out camper coop and put pine needles in both, smells like Christmas in there. we are trying to get more chickens to sleep in new pen, there are 6 that do but the rest i take over after dark hope as they see where they come out of in morning they will go in on own, we counted 48 last night.

Wow, sounds like you both put in a lot of work! What are you going to do with all the eggs you get once they start laying?

Squatting good. (I still had to wait 2 weeks after the first squat.)

Twitchy eye bad. (I get that too.

)

Huge abscess on old dog bad. (Belle cost me another $600 today, but she's going to be alright.)

Cool weather good. (It's been in the low 70s here this week. Heaven.)

Running out of eggs bad. (Bet you can buy some home grown eggs. Try farm market or craigslist?)

Husband returning from 10 day overseas trip good. (But not til Sunday

Waiting for eggs with BYC friends excellent.

most of them were laying, but last mth slowed down we got 22 eggs a day and sold them to a action dinner, that is a place in the action to eat, now we only getting 10 to 12 a day, we do have daughter who comes over on week ends and she takes most of them home for family.
plus dh sales them at action.

We are chickens. Yes, we are
We can be stressful. Make you run to the bar
But then we start laying. We pop out an egg
And after waiting so long, you celebrate with a keg.
But there is a price! We want pie.
Give us a lot! Don't be shy!
Give us our worms. Give us our scratch.
Give us your first born. Put it down our hatch!
And speaking of hatching, we like to brood.
We will raise our own chicks. We will raise them to be rude.
You will always be our slaves. Until you die.
Accept it, humans! Don't bother to cry!

The best I can do right now.

Will a picture of my new niece make you happy?

Sorry. Who can stop at one?

Here is my one surviving pumpkin. The other 20 or so rotted this past week. They were only an inch or two big. This one is over a foot wide.

The Bourbon Reds are growing fast. About four inches this past week! They are now 13 weeks. I would guess the boys around ten pounds. I was told that they can dress out at about twenty pounds at 30 weeks. That means they will be ready for Thanksgiving this year if I needed more meat (with 2 BBW, I seriously doubt it!!). Two boys will be in the freezer come spring. I will see who is the best husband to the 2 girls. If I get too attached, I will sell them live at the swap in May.

Mia. A Boxer mix I have been watching for the past week. Her parents couldn't handle her while dealing with a newborn. She went home today.

Hey mc! Awesome poem, pictures, turkeys and kin! Congrats on the new family member!

Speaking of birthdays...in a half hour my babies turn 18 weeks old. Here is a little preview of what we will be doing tomorrow. Party all day! No eggs will be laid, I am quite sure.
