Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Well we have our first layer start laying on Friday, so far we've gotten 3 small eggs from her in 4 days. I'm not expecting one today because she laid about 6pm yesterday. Anyway, since we eat more eggs than she is giving us and the other 4 aren't pulling their weight i had to give in and get eggs. We had 6 left, I bought a dozen and somehow was given 16 eggs from someone who has more eggs than she can handle. Anyway, I am expecting that now since I have a total of 34 eggs then maybe the other chickens will start laying! Or maybe it's just wishful thinking! Either way I hope I have bought my last store bought eggs!

Congratulations!

I could do that but I am not sure I will. This is part of the reason I don't think I will try to keep the girls laying through winter. They need their energy for staying warm anyway and the eggs will just freeze. Unless... what if I rigged up a system like at the bank drive thru where the egg gets whisked into the house via network of vacuum tubes...

Jackie, the feather-legged cuckoo marans (who was supposed to be a SLW), squatted for me just now. I don't get it, she couldn't pass a lima bean between those bones of hers.

So now I have two almost 21-week-olds squatting, but I'm thinking it will probably be September when we get a break in the weather before they'll lay. We are about to get into triple-digit temps, so it's just going to be too hot.

MotorcycleChick, thank you for the dryer sheet trick, I'll try it!

You could rig up a shaker to vibrate the eggs out of the nest boxes down to a conveyor belt that would move the egg to the vacuum tubes!

You reminded me of an idea my husband had back when I was in the truck with him! Some truck stops have Idle Air. It is something that we have to pay for. It is a big hose that comes in the window, and gives heat or A/C, and now you can get cable/internet. DH wanted there to be a feature like at the bank for dogs. You stick your dog in the tube, and it whisks the dog straight up above the trucks, and over to a fenced grassy area. I think he just liked the idea of the dogs' faces!

Woo bio val! Won't be long now! Don't worry about the bones. Penny has always had the most narrow pelvis. That's why I quit checking...I think it is more accurate as a predictor of a bird who was stopped laying rather than as a predictor of who is close to laying. Squatting is a good thing! I bet you have an egg within the next 10 days!

I sure hope so.

Congrats on the eggs! It's fun to find them isn't it? I've been enjoying my one layer and trying not to be too hard on the other 5. I'm sure they can't help being lazy jerks...
