Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

well I did have a lot of eggs today, but I only have 6 in the basket and 9 on the floor from kitchen to living room, courtesy of Chester de Cheddar Cheese. when he first got here over a year ago, I gated him out of the kitchen to prevent him eating everything and spilling garbage everywhere. he's been so good, he's had free rein and done well, the occasional spilled coffee grounds was about the worst and he did break a bunch of blown egg shells. he's gated out of the kitchen again. probably forever. Sweetie has trouble climbing over the gate, so I'll have to get a new one, that can swing open.

all's swell with the flock, gorgeous day today for free ranging all afternoon. the mail was really light today - for the whole office... it must have gone somewhere else...it will catch up in the next day or two and be really heavy...but anyway, I was home super early which was ever so nice! of course, being only the full end of day 1 for new baby, Mama Gossamer hasn't budged. I expect no trouble for perhaps the next 30 hours. after that... it's anyone's guess

TN- not sure what I get to consider? Is it 12/13 or 12/16 cause I started w 16 w 2 clear and 1 blood ring.

This was my second hatch w the same shipper. From my it's hatch I got 15/16 and squirt was the only one to lose an egg. All hatched from the incubator last time.

Mortie-sweetie is the boyfriend! Which makes your visual quite entertaining.

Total hatch rate is the average for all set by all hatched. Fertile hatch rate is the average of all that went into lockdown by all that hatched.

Total hatch rate is 75%
Fertile hatch rate is 92.3%

I have a new niece! She is so sweet and absolutely perfect! I went to see her yesterday evening and I didn't want to leave!

Not much happening on the chicken front. Lots of eggs and loads of chicks.

yes, the visual of poor Sweetie... he's just crotchety about having to climb the gate really... but the frequency of having to climb over is an issue. a "swing out" gate would be fine. I don't want Chester to be able to be in the kitchen, period. he's naughty. I know it, so I put things out of reach. doesn't stop him from opening the lower cupboards and knocking over the travel mugs looking for a snack. he'd been so good around eggs for a while now - the last time he took eggs was disappointing for him - nothing but blown egg shells. no contents. and a big punishment. still, my fault for trusting him. one paw and he's got the basket on it's side...taking an egg at a time by the looks of it... missed one, it fell in the sink and broke. missed another, landed on the floor... he left that one because... there are just oh so many more... he carried eggs into the living room to eat and smooshed a lot into the carpet. so. NO kitchen.

I haven't been out to the flock yet, I'm just praying that Gossamer will remain on that nest. I'll be getting out there momentarily. it's not nice weather anyway, so outside of the Dome girls breaking an egg on me... I don't have to rush.

Lindz, best wishes for your family on the arrival of your just hatched niece!

What is her name?

Cheeka, Chester isn't naughty, he's a BEAGLE! You can't fight genetics! Wish I could have watched him stealing eggs one at a time, though.

Growing up, we had a lot of dogs, and my mom was sure that they had a conscience and understood right from wrong (up to a point) despite all the experts saying that it is just behavioral conditioning and the dogs reacting to our energy and body language make them look guilty when they do wrong. Just recently saw a show that vindicated my mom; dogs do understand consequences and have a conscience. Personally, I think the problem is they just have to be constantly reminded what is right and wrong, some of them like every 5 minutes!!!

I know what Sweetie should be for Halloween this year!

No new reports on the sick chicks. Waiting waiting waiting for test results. Best egg day in a while this week, 3 eggs from 9 hens plus 2 bantam eggs!
