Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

They tell me that when their combs turn red and get bigger that they start laying shortly after that. I have two Barred Rocks that must have some kind of silly bright red hat on their heads.

No that one in your picture has them beat but they do have bright red full combs and bright red waddles. They had nothing when I got them. I have come to the conclusion that they are roosters and they are afraid to crow because I might eat them.

Oh. For a minute I thought I'd found the problem! Sigh. Back to the drawing board.....but, if they are really in cognito, it must be a conspiracy. But then I never believed in that comb getting red thing, all my chickens of various ages have bright red combs, most are no where near laying or crowing seriously...maybe they have pea combs and are whisper crowers...they are smart enough to figure it out after all, they want to keep a good thing going...I don,t know how to break it to you,.. but you may never get eggs.,you can have drumsticks though.

It's a violation of the egneva convention, and they may relatiate by surrounding you in the coop and protesting loudly, it CAN be frightening....brrr,shudder, when I remember them doing it to me. They will sneak up on you, just put the egg down, and back away...

my girls laid the day I got them! 2 eggs yestarday!

Oooooooo, that's cheating! You're supposed to start with just hatched babies and nervously wait for them to lay; losing sleep, training them to roost at night, gnashing your nails, pouring tons of money into brooding supplies and feed, pampering them during the heat wave, and watching for every change or squat before you get eggs. You have to EARN those eggs!!
