They tell me that when their combs turn red and get bigger that they start laying shortly after that. I have two Barred Rocks that must have some kind of silly bright red hat on their heads.

My girls (or boys) have give me problems since I brought them home. You are so lucky to have a normal family. I bet they even lay eggs in the nest box.my girls laid the day I got them! 2 eggs yestarday!
It's a violation of the egneva convention, and they may relatiate by surrounding you in the coop and protesting loudly, it CAN be frightening....brrr,shudder, when I remember them doing it to me. They will sneak up on you, just put the egg down, and back away...
