Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

So cold out this morning.. brrr. I have a question maybe someone will have some insight on. I have three young hens that just started laying in the last three weeks. I get between 1-3 eggs every day. They are on layer feed, I put oyster shell out for them, and they free range for about one hour per day. In the morning before I go to school, I give them a bit of leftovers as a treat (usually veggies, potatoes and grapes). Yestaerday afternoon as I cleaned the poop board, I found three eggs with a leathery shell under the bars. I had only cleaned the poop board two days prior. I am wondering what is going on, because it seems each girl is laying a good egg at least every other day. Any ideas?

Lynnc that is normal for early layers. They'll straighten out after a while. I wouldn't worry yet.

Mortie go out side and wrap yourself up in a down blanket and walk around. You won't be cold. And neither are the girls. God made them to be handle nature. You've done all you need to protect them from drafts, rain, snow so they'll be just fine.

Yup, they are cookies. They had a few that sounded good. One was a butter caramel. I can't remember what other one sounded good.
A waitress this morning said she is in the process of building a coop... Now that she has thirty chickens and some ducks. Lol! I told her we all do it. Idk why we do it though.
Yes, the first winter is a lot different in reality than we "planned" it. Giving them warm oatmeal with apples and milk will make you feel better.

Mortie, a couple of handfuls of cracked corn for them before bed is supposed to help them generate heat. The chickens will be fine, but it's so sad about those poor frozen eggscicles.

MC, I didn't look very carefully at that cookie mix. All I saw in the pic was something that looked like meat frosting! My mom used to get some spreadable meat stuff in a can (deviled ham?) when we were kids, so I was instantly 5 yrs old and grossed out all over again! Popular thing started in San Francisco a few years ago, bacon glazed donuts! I never tried one though. I'm kind of a bacon purist - plain, in a BLT, or crumbled in a bowl of pea soup is how I like it. Mmmmm, getting hungry now!

Yeah for as much as I like bacon I want it for breakfast or in a blt. Haven't tried the anything bacon craze yet.... Too scared!

ron, they have to grow up soon eh? please tell this bunch that! it's beyond ridiculous. I was going to dig them out and put them on a roost, but figured they would disturb the entire flock if I did. before I took this pic, the big red boy standing was laying in the empty spot on the front left... nice and warm in there tho...
