What about getting maybe a silkie friend for her?? I'd send you lucky cause he still doesn't want to roost and would rather sleep in a nest. Squirt and her babies finally moved by themselves outta the crate and onto the roost.
HAha, we actually tried those maple bacon cookies. They were not bad at all!
It's so cold. I did TONS of research over the last year (it's been almost a year since I decided to get chickens!) so in my head I KNOW how to proceed because I made a PLAN based on good, scientific information as well as anecdotal information but...I was not prepared for the reality. The real feel temp outside is 8 right now. I know in my head that they're ok in their coop. It hasn't even snowed yet and it's not windy or anything so I've left the pop door open. I just went out and they're not even huddled up, they're sleeping like they always do. I just feel bad. It's been below freezing here for several days straight now and all I can say is at least my heated waterer is working. I know plenty of other animals live outside but the cold is just so biting ugh. I've picked them up during free range and their little bodies are warm. They're able to free freed as much as they would like. I knew winter was going to be hard but I wasn't ready for it to start yet and this is my first time keeping pets outdoors. Our cat is strictly indoors and the dog goes out for short times and then comes right back in even though she's a german shepherd and the cold doesn't bother her a bit. I just have been raised that we keep our animals inside and I'm trying to get used to the birds being outside.
We're getting between 1-3 eggs a day. I still only have 4 laying. Midge and Maggie have not laid since they went broody 6 weeks ago. Penny and Wilson lay almost every day and the two ameracauna I have laying take turns on our 3 egg days. Poor Penny. Almost never takes a day off and we love her so. I fear she is going to burn out.
I've been absent. Busy. Not wanting to face the pileup of posts I haven't read....many things. I missed you all though!
