Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I have to say its been pretty hard following threads for me too, finally finding time to enjoy BYC again. My Dad had open heart surgery at 80 years old last june and is recovering well, finally home and driving!. Mom has dialysis 3x a week.. some days I dont know if I am coming or going! I keep coming back to this thread, its always been my favorite. I guess its the people here too, miss chatting with you guys. I have our state thread I love and we meet every year, but this group of folks has always been special to me.

You need a big hug too!

I hope you can keep going. It is very hard for sure.

jchny!! Good news that your dad is doing better, but that must have been tough going, for all of you, especially with your mom's troubles to think of also. I have been wondering how big your menagerie has become. Some day when you have the time, I'd love an inventory! Or maybe a negative inventory would be quicker- a list of what you don't have!

All the BYC talk of older hens slowing down sure has proved true for me this year. Oddly, though, my hatchery Buff Orp that apparently quit laying completely after her pullet season (and I thought would be dead by now), has now at 2½ years started laying sporadically! She spends time on the nest daily, and every once on a while lays an egg. Crazy!

Hello Min and welcome! I had seen you several times and figured you were reading through. Sorry about your losses to the fox. Your pullets are so pretty! I wish our Ameraucanas had crests like your Araucanas. They look dressed for a party! Biscuit the crazy Leghorn has calmed down quite a bit. Must be hormone changes as she has quit laying completely. Stopped cold one day, and with the exception of a single egg about 3 weeks later, has not laid since. I miss her big exotic white eggs.

Can Zazzles come for a sleepover? Promise I won't teach her any bad habits.

Hey guys! I know that I have been MIA lately. I lost Jezebel on Thanksgiving. She just went downhill really fast and I'm not sure exactly what happened.

Anyway, we have had some rotten luck the past few months with the van blowing both head gaskets and needing a new water pump, then the pump in the well went out last weekend. It has all gotten me into a funk and I haven't been very motivated. We had Abby's birthday party today and within 30 minutes I was ready for everyone to leave. She turned 4 on Thursday. I'm not sure how that is even possible.

What a cutie! With all you have had to deal with lately, on top of caring for 4 kids, you are obviously a trooper because you've already got your tree up! Wow! I still have mini pumpkins and turkeys on the table from Thanksgiving.

Hope you have time to catch your breath and enjoy your little darlings at Christmas time. It won't be long and they will be teenagers and the magic and excitement will fade a bit. We still love and enjoy Christmas, but it's not quite the same without little ones in the house. Although, it is nice to sleep in a little bit on Christmas morning!

I have seen the hatchery lifespan here too. Its pretty sad. My BA were from MT Healthy,, everyone knows the issue with them.. never again. Many of my BA hens and roos were lucky to see a year. Egg binding was a common issue in the hens. The roosters have all been very human aggressive! Bruce is my last BA roo and he is dangerous, I have him penned awaiting his "bad day". What few BA hens are left I hope make 2 years. Mabel and Bunny are still strong and healthy. Its changed here a lot, I no longer keep the GLW (rehomed) Red and his girls, Betsy and Spike went to a young man in 4H that wanted to work on the breed. His mom and I are close friends. I have 3 breeds of turkey. Bourbon Red, Midget White and my "pets".. a BBW hen "Puppy" and a BBB Tom "Bacon" that were way too nice, friendly a bird to process. Some heritage chicken breeds like BR, RIR, WL, BCM, BM and several misfits that needed a home. Always my Lavender Orps, love them and my EEs. Pekin, Muscovy duck... embden and chinese geese, guinea, quail, goats, pigs eieeeiiiooo! No cows, still... I got away from bantam except from modern game bantam and OEGB all stayed. Silkies, cochin, and millies...Just didn't fit our needs here and keeping them warm, safe from predators was becoming a big problem. I found safe homes for them. My Modern are a pair, blue splash roo, black hen and live in the heated garage, so tiny and sweet, I just love them. I guess if I have pets they are it. Very social sweet lil birds.

This is my rooster, Johnny

Frankie (johnny in back)

Sorry the camera is really old! Neither are even a pound, so tiny and sweet. DH named them after a johnny cash song LOL! (Long legged guitar pickin man) They are my project "fun" birds. I still keep my old english game bantam also, love them too! I wish the roosters would tolerate each other... not happening. Frankie is nesting, and has started the Egg Song... no eggs yet. Johnny stands guard if she sits, and gets really frustrated if anyone walks by. But I still pick him up and he snuggles. love this breed!

That's a long time to be in a cast! She had to have surgery, didn't she? She must be thrilled to get her arm back.

Few years back, my brother in law hit some gravel and laid his bike down, mostly on his ankle. Broke other miscellaneous bones too. Took surgery and lots of rehab for him to walk normally again. Scariest part was when he was air transported from Maui to a bigger hospital in Honolulu, he almost died from an undetected punctured lung. Much to his wife's chagrin, he still rides.

Love the modern games too, but don't have any. Maybe some day. Sounds like you have streamlined to what works for you. We let the Seramas hatch and raise some chicks this spring and now those offspring are practically wild. I won't do that again. I'd rather raise the chicks and have them tame. Maybe I will move some of them into the garage for a while to tame them down a bit. Oh, well, as soon as I move the 3 large pullets (2 orps and a marans) out of the garage! They are almost as big as the big girls, but I am waiting for the baby peeps to stop before moving them in with the mob. Did you know that some people actually park cars in their garage? Imagine that!
