i am still reading to catch up. Awesome! Hope my girls will be laying again soon. We are getting 20s at night already bet its going to be a cold winter.

I don't like to change tradition but wonder why Santa Claus didn't have chickens pulling his sled. I mean who ever heard of flying deer.

.......now tell the truth. Wouldn't it look much more real with eight chickens perched on the roof ridge in front of the sled instead of eight silly deer. Or am I giving this too much thought. I quit believing when I was six because of stuff like this. I feel like I got cheated out of a couple years. Interested in your thoughts.

HEHEHE!!!!! Roger would so be an excellent Rudolf... just make sure you watch her. We know of her alterior motives muahahaha it may be a plot for more pie!

She was born for the job. Who needs a red nose when your flying a bright red flag like she is. Look at that girl and tell me she wouldn't be perfect for the job

hahahaha! Roger-dolph! she'd be Super at the job, what more could she want...? travelling and visiting... although it would no longer be a secret ~ she would delight in announcing the sleigh's arrival at each and every house with her Peacock call!

and to the thread! great story!! there was some guy, somewhere... (it was on the news a few years back) who had lopped the head of one of his chickens, and she did not die. he had to feed her with a dropper, down her neck, but she lived another 2 years.

ACW, maybe I should qualify... it does get cold enough up here for the beaver hat, for the normal folk... I hate heat, love the cold, and get overheated really easy if I'm wearing too much gear. I don't do well in the summer above 76*. I have a welders ice vest to wear outside in the heat. I look quite odd all trussed up in this vest, but it's got little ice cubes all around it and it's like my very own personal ac... I get neurological issues when the trunk of my body and my head get too hot, balance issues... so usually i'm fine with very little.
I'm with you on the waste thing, can't waste a good pelt/skin!

I posted in a thread about to weeks ago that my husband would never go near my flock. He doesn't know about them, and doesn't want to. He wanted eggs, not knowledge.
Well, the last few days he has been tending the chickens. We had a hiccup when i said he had to rake the coop this morning (too much spilled water, and he said it was smelling bad), but he even collected eggs without being told! The funny part (aside from the way the chickens have been telling him he isn't welcome in their pen without me) is that on day one, I told him to half fill a bucket with water in the house, and fill the waterers outside. He said that was too much work. It was easier to fill the containers inside. He needed my help each day. This morning I mentioned the bucket again. "Oh, that sounds like a much better idea! It will make things so much easier!!"
Men! They are crazier than Roger!

Mine does a similar thing, he tells me a revelation he has had, then i tell him I told him that weeks ago. He really doesn't remember me telling him that. I just look at him....really? Good for a laugh. I do have to say, cold weather isn't my favorite thing, or really hot either. Below forty and above ninety...forget it. But, I would rather put on another sweater because you can only take so many clothes off in the heat. But i do have the artic boots and insulated overalls and thick wool sweaters, I feel like getting ready for outerspace...if I could get a spacesuit with a heater in it I would have one.

While I would love to have several acres (I want to free range!) I like not having to go too far to tend the chickens. I usually just use a hoody, and skip the coat. I am still working out the glove situation. I also wear rubber muck boots

without socks. Not that I like going sockless, but the gosh darn boots keep biting my socks! They usually rip them right off, and leave them in the toe!

Stupid 'ol mean boots!
Anyway, I don't have to bundle up much.

I have news to share! My slacker chicken number two, laid her first egg today! Poor thing, there was a lot of blood with this one.

Pretty sure it was Nox today, but the egg looked more pink than white in the pic my DH sent.

That's Nox back in September. She has a huge comb and wattles now.

I got 3 eggs ~ Isis' blue, and one of each, brown and cream... again, collected in the dark... such a heavy load again, I had to make a second trip back for mail and parcels as it wouldn't all fit, I was still pinned in the vehicle for the first couple of hours, but I made it in time for the outgoing truck. 2 more long days, then a short day on Saturday, 2 more new carriers to train on Sunday, so hopefully light loads for all of us (I'd get the brunt of the load, or the long distance ones) and just found out I have another long long day on Monday. the chicks are due on Tuesday. I hope they come on time. I'll get the whole setup ready on Saturday (need starter feed!), it's all clean and ready for bedding,

the cats were whining for treats, so instead I gave them a pile of catnip. now I have 4 bonker nut cases tearing around the house... what was I thinking???

Lilwanis, congrats on the newest layer! Nox needs a little Pie with maybe some olive oil to make passage easier... lots of mine had bloody shells in the beginning... poor babies, must be so rough!

MC, that's the beauty of freeranging. I keep some dry food in the coop (I know when its empty cause all the chickens will ambush you coming out the door) but they snack and go range. In bad weather I toss their food off the poarch into the front yard, or under the house and deck in the back. I just wrap up and wear those thick sheepskin slippers from llbean. I just bought one of those black rubber water bowls...I'll just pour the hot water from the woodstove into it to melt the ice,and put it on the side of the poarch..they'll have to come over here if they want a sip. I mean hey, they can fly right? I was just looking at a pic of my rooster, he has got some really strong looking legs, great glossy feathers...I bet my chickens are in much better physical condition than those chickens they keep in pens and on tethers. How could they not be.? Just felt like bragging a little. :)
