Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

went to water the flock and get the Silkies put away - came back in and the chick is out of the egg! not a drop of blood on the shell/membrane/chick... and it looks good! it won't need to eat or drink til tomorrow at least... but I'll dip its beak. pics in a bit! tough little cookie!
That is great!

Make sure the vent is not covered with goo--and watch for pasty butt. They often get that when they hatch hard.

thanks ron! you saved the day! all your advice made such a difference and because you mentioned... I did check the vent - nice and clear and pink, I always watch for pasty butt... find it very interesting that they seem to enjoy being blown dry after a pasty butt bath...

eta - it's hanging out on the cooler end of the heating pad. I think I made the humidity perfect keeping it in my sweaty bra...

The chick looks perfect!

Nice job!

Wow, it was ready all right. Good job is right. Are you going to put it out with other babies that hatch with mom?

I'm afraid to put it with those 2. if it were just Cressa, I would, but Louise has 2 of the 3 chicks that Cressa actually hatched believing that she is their Mama... so when I tried to leave all the chicks with just Cressa (after I found the first abandoned chick) everyone went nuts... I can try giving it to a few other of my good broodies, I have never had a rejected chick, so this is weird for me. my bet is Gossy will take it. or I'll make it mine. that way it's guaranteed to be a boy.

oh, and it's dry and fluffy and very much up and about! its a nice golden chipmunk, with 5 toes, so it's likely Cressa's egg, and the heavy golden feathering on its feet and legs make me believe that Henry is its Dad.

3 hours and 30 minutes old and ready to be a star!

has been dipped, and has learned how to eat. BAM.

very attached to me already. I know it takes 4 days for imprinting to complete, but we've got a thang.
