Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Whew.... I have been MIA for a long time and there was much to catch up on.
Rumples hatched 5 eggs from a friend of mine. I am hoping for Olive Eggers. They are 4 weeks old now and I am having trouble guessing the sex. I will try to get pictures when the sun shines through. I has been so smoky here, that you don't see any sunshine.

Cheeka... I have your treatment works. I have been going through some similar stuff. Pain, fatigue.....

I had an MRI last month, but I need to get a new Neuro. The current one is a quack.

Hi OK.... you are always missed!!

Hope you get it Debby! Sorry about your birds. So frustrating.

Thanks W4W's, We did not get it,but that doesn't mean I won't stop looking for it.....We did have one come back, late this afternoon, she didn't get hurt, she ran for the hills...Tillie is shaken to the core...I feel so sorry for her....she's got quite a few gashes in her and nothing left on her tail! Glady's we are pretty sure got taken, she still had some dye from the the blu-kote on her and I found feathers with it on them. Those feathers came from her neck & side of her chest, so I'm kinda thinking it got her. We are going to hold out hope though.

Is your blood calcium level over 10?

Good to hear from you Scrambles! I've been wondering where you were. My sis and I took a road trip and passed through southern Idaho. I think I'd prefer the northern part. Scrub gets old really quick. The smoke is everywhere- all through Oregon and N.CA. Hope hope hoping that the El Nino predictions come true.

Happy to hear that Rumples is a mama again. She's a member of the tough ol' birds' club, I think.

Before I had chickens, I thought the fox was maligned and given a bad rap. BUT when one kills and eats something someone that I've named and cuddled, well, no more sympathy from me. I let the bantams out for only the second time since Minnie Pearl got killed. The dogs know when the foxes have been in the yard the night before, so I'm learning from them. It's still a risk, but they are so much happier. Quality of life vs. potential loss of life. Happily, the big girls have been out for the last 3 weeks without any problems. I know the foxes can get in their yard, but so far so good. I keep letting the dogs to in to eat apples and poop. Dogs hate the foxes. And rats. Scooter goes crazy if he smells a rat. Sorry about your girls. Good luck to you, and bad luck to the fox.

I'm so sorry - I hate that they take the opportunity for an easy meal when they have such superior hunting skills and abundant food. I hope your Tilly recovers, glad the other turned up and Gladys... well, not sounding too good, but she had a wonderful life with you... and I know your heartbreak well. it took me almost the entire Summer to recover from the loss of Stella and not have tremendous anxiety every time I opened a door... I've lost them to fox before and it's been upsetting... I'm not sure why this time was extra traumatic.. probably peri-menopause

they need to be outdoors as much as possible, it's not fair to deny them even with the risk. it's been great to have it back to "normal" lately - Chester out front guarding is a must, but I am enjoying it again.

Look veeeery carefully in the above picture, and you will see where the chicken wire is torn apart.

This is what happened on the inside. I am guessing raccoon. No one is missing, and I didn't see any injuries. That hardware cloth was ripped from the fasteners. It took quite some strength! Ironically, there were two other ways to get in last night, but it decided to break in the window. I never would have known otherwise.

oh wow. Glad you didn't lose anyone. I blame the cheap quality chicken wire we get these days. They don't make it like they used to.

We saved and reused the old wire when we rebuilt the existing coop here. Had to get some new wire to make it work. Difference in quality is night and day.
