Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

What? No body likes this little sweetheart? Very friendly, a breeze to tame, he'll sit in your lap and fall asleep if you rub his ears and scratch his head, he'll even perch like an eagle on your wrist. I can't wait to see him in grown up feathers. American games are great chickens, the males are rarely human aggressive. True, you can't keep older roosters together..but who needs more than one rooster at a time? Hens are pretty and smart, great layers and broodies, productive foragers. Easy for them to fly away from danger. Just had to add my two cents worth....:)
I like him, and I like the background, reminds me of here...

Two eggs. That is the good news.
that is a great start MC! and most deserving of some good ole Pie! I got all involved in reading and chores inside, and never went back out to check for afternoon eggs... shame on me, meant to give the gang a little more time outside, but it did flurry some... that's what drove them back in earlier...so probably not a big deal for them...

Awww. You have to get your system fixed so you can post more pics! I remember him from before. He must look different by now.
If I had a big place with enough room, games would be on the list. They do like to fly. Do yours mind being cooped up? Ours were always out, except at night, and if they were in, they were waiting to get out!

I have been reading this thread from the beginning. It has been great. Y'all are great. I have gotten some awesome info. As you can probaly tell, I am new to the chicken world. I have 12 hens. 5 RIR, and the other I have no idea. But they are fun. Here is a pic of "ugly" chicken. She got that name cause she looked like a buzzer when she was a chick
. She was the last to start laying. I got her in July. Got my first egg from her last week. Lol. Thought she was a he!!!
OH, so glad to have you with us! No kidding about the texting, i think spike has roger in her fav's list hehe!

She has the spike stink eye look in the picture, too cute! my wyandottes are hatchery too (or so i was told), but the gold laced. They do forage well, but aren't quite the friendliest birds. Spike will play lap bird for mealies, and so will Red, my roo.. but he is spoiled rotten anyway.

My sister in Ohio has 3 children. 6, 7, and 10. The youngest is terrified of dogs, yet they got a Blk Lab puppy. I said they should get chickens. 3 kids, 3 colors of eggs. Sounded like a good idea to me! No one listened.
Fast forward about three months. I was talking to my sister last night, and she is complaining that Gabby is still afraid of the dog. I told her to get chickens. She laughed. Apparently my B-I-L said the same thing a few days ago. I get to talk them into it on Christmas.
So... My thought is Ameraucana (guaranteed to not lay a brown egg, which EE are capable of doing), a BR, and a Golden Campine. Anyone have any thoughts on kids and their first chickens? Also, how common is it for an EE to lay brown eggs. I know a few people have said theirs do.
I bought a new bucket and strainer today for the FF. I played with my old system yesterday. I would have had to drill bigger holes (plain water wasn't coming out well) and it was too small anyway. I am going to have an easier time with it now.
No eggs yet today. Come on three eggs!!!!

MC, sad for that little one fearing dogs. Great idea on the chickens! I will probably have to change up my buckets too, but am going to start my babies off right away with FF. Trying to decide how big a bag of chick feed to buy... I know they won't be piggies like the CX are. These are my first babies for layers, the 5 girls i have were young pullets when i got them. Any thoughts guys please shout out...

AWW! I think thats a gorgeous bird! One of hubby's cousins will not have anything but the game birds. he is also very insistent that i need only get those...oops. I am sure i will hear about it over Christmas.

My dogs and chicken get along very well. I used to have 2 white rock roosters I raised from chicks. They would lay with Gretchen my lab mix. Was sooo funny. They would preen her fur. She didn't mind at all.

Hi luv, welcome!

my BR Wilma is so jealous of the dog, it's gotten better over the last month, but wow, would she stalk the dog and peck at her tail if she felt that the dog was getting more attention than her! I want WR's someday, and not hatchery knock-offs...

That chicken is awesome. How many do you estimate you lose a year to predators? I would get some if they stood a chance as free range birds. I don't have bears here but everything else........ I think I see a BIGFOOT in the woods carrying a chicken.

I wish I could upload pics, from the Nikon too...will eventually figure it out. He is bigger but still the same goofy guy. Yes they are outside from dawn to dusk...sometimes i have to pen up the more agressive stags, i have to limit my numbers soon. Its extra work...wish they could be roaming around.sometimes the hens take a nap in the coop...i think they are playing online games with roger. I've looked at alot of different breeds, but really can't say I'd want to switch to anything else. You can always mix the cic start in with the other feed if you buy too much....any thoughts on what?? I've just change my system a bit, my inner buckets fit right in a little blue cooler, I can keep that in the poarch, and add hot water to it to keep the temp up there longer. Can hang the bucket to drain while I'm making my coffee. Keeping all the feed inside an extra large cooler. Makes it easy to have it all right there.
