Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Rats are super good chewers. I. Had one enlarge a one inch space to 2 inches. I wouldn't put wire down on the floor, the chickens can injure their feet and get toes caught while scratching. Just staple hardware cloth around the parameter of the coop on the outside, bend the wire so it makes a skirt on the ground. Cover that with dirt or rocks or whatever...grass. animals will go up to the coop, attempt to dig and run into wire. Once grass grows through the wire, they won't be able to pull it up. Don't enclose the coop so you can't see under it....great place for rats if you do. Rat love eggs, and they've been known to kill small chickens while they sleep......and eat their feet off. Gross huh. Haven't seen that personally, just wanted to scare you. If the bottom and sides of your coop are tight...you may not need the wire. Keep an eye on it, and don't let it be a hiding place under there.

With Hanukkah, Christmas, and the New Year upon us, I am sure everyone has had to think about the care of the chickens while you are away. I plan on being gone for 24-36 hours, so no problem there. I am curious about longer stays away.
I have 18 LF, 2 one gallon feeders, and 2 one gallon waterers. Heat for one, but the other just needs hooked up. The coop is sized for 30 birds (120 sq ft). They would not have access to the run.
How long could I stay away before they go crazy? I admit my biggest concern is boredom (I would put a cabbage head in) and them knocking the waterer over, resulting a shortage of water.

Ideally you could talk someone into coming over and checking the water/feeder and collecting the eggs. If not, fill your feeders and see how long they last. Water is the biggest concern..if you are filling it everyday now, then its obviously not enough, esp for that many birds, I'd want at least five gallons. I have many large 'saucers' catching any rain off the roof, and an automatic game feeder set up to spew out their regular ration of feed once a day. It holds 200 lbs. There is a spring back in the woods, so unless there's a big drought....they can get water.
Next year I'd like a set up to collect rain water off the coop and work a siphon system to a water trough....some sort of solar energy to unfreeze it.

Backup plan, the neighbor will be coming by regularly to collect the eggs anyway.
Played the chicken song again...can you guess which one is roger?

2nd from left, back row, looking for trouble! I noticed her too.

There is a boy in our neighborhood that I would hire to watch the chickens. The harder part is what to do with the dogs. Bunny, parakeets, and cockatiel need care too. Sometimes it's easier to just stay home!

6 eggs again today and another chilly night tonight. For us that means low 30s which seems balmy compared to some of you guys.

Just got a pm from Roger. She wrote her own song. Sing it to the tune of Deck the Halls

Deck the coop with colored lights!
