Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Quote: Just a guess but live weight of this deer is probably 150 to 175 pounds. Remove the insides (guts ) and that drops probably 20 pounds. Hide, Head, Antlers and lower part of the legs removed it probably loses another 20 to 30 pounds. Rib cage, Back Bone, Flank is another 10 to 20 pounds and pretty much all for Roger. Now ready to "Bone it out" and will lose even more. All fat gets removed and is not edible.

if you google "chicken keepers" in their new google community thing... i do have a site for pictures and sharing stuff... but i come here more than I go there... and it's just me and one other member so far...lol I set it up last week.

long long day today, mail was 45 minutes late to arrive and there was a ton of it. I finished just under the wire, the outgoing truck was fired up and ready to roll... glad I did make it or it's a race to the office where I live, if I can get there by 5... or I have to take the raw mail all the way to Albany... so glad I made it... I hate driving in the dark.

didn't follow up last night, I have 5 eggs from yesterday, and 4 eggs for today. I gave the lawn mower guy 2 dozen eggs to bring home, it's just him and his elderly mom, and I know they appreciate it. He's a farm worker, works 16 hours a day from Spring til now... and he's trying to set up his own little business. he can fix any small motor, even the stuff that sat under water for weeks (from Irene). if he can make a success, he wants goats, and some chickens. I told him I would hatch chicks for him. for free. he was over the moon.

I have to take more pictures of the chicks ~ they have changed so much in the last 3 days. and I see 2 that look like my Blu

, and a group of 4 that are pretty similar to each other, shades of brown... the rest are nicely varied, should make a pretty flock.

I don't post on some of those OT style threads. they are the first to say that it's bare bones, tell it like it is language... but they are downright mean and snarky sometimes. huge turnoff. one person copied a ladies ad from craigslist and they all made fun of her for not knowing that her chickens can survive a New Hampshire mountain winter without an insulated coop and stuff... I found the ad, her phone # was listed (whoever copied and pasted didn't take the whole thing). I called her, she was really nice. I explained that her chickens that she and her family love will be fine, please pull the ad and please come to BYC and learn lots... a few people commented that they appreciated my effort, but it was all "newbies" Not one Old Timer could give a hoot. they think you can't fix stupid... and they're right... can't teach them a thing, but I can help the lovely lady who simply didn't know, and appreciated the knowledge. funny, because most of them claim to be Christian or God fearing / believing folk... seems a might contradictory to not do unto others... it is interesting as well, that the Moderator who reads here hasn't posted a single poem!

This might help you W4W. The weight of this hind quarter is exactly 20 pounds. After the bone is removed the large tub total weight was 14 pounds. Thats the meat I will grind and freeze. Roger gets the bone and the smaller tub which combined weighs 6 pounds. I expect that there is a lot more waste.....I mean Roger food when butchering deer. I cut off all of the outside layer of skin to remove any dirt or hair that comes in contact with the meat. Not the most sanitary conditions skinning and quartering a deer in a barn. Also deer are shot to put them down and the area around the wound is bloodshot and gets wasted. Hope this is helpful

Roosters.....we must be kind to the poor testosterone ridden feathered friends. I don't know your rooster, but what I've observed in mine....the rooster will stand guard over the hen while she is inside, laying. I really think the egg song is nature calling the rooster to come and protect the hen as she is ready to leave the nest and return to the flock. He is geared up now and ready to escort her back. He is always thereto protect the flock, esp the home turf. Question is, does he see you as friend, or potential foe. When he is excited, all he may see is red. We're smarter than them, maybe. If you have roosters spend some time observing their behavior and subtle clues in body language that all tell you what kind of mood he's in. If i saw a bull in a pasture shaking his head and pawing the ground...i wouldn't enter the pasture right now. Same with Mr roo. To concede and not push him doesn't indicate weakness on your flock status....you just know better. They respond greatly to voice..use your voice to snap him out of it. Her Mr roos! What do you think you are doing? He may actually shake his head and focus his eye on your face. Er, uh, nothing! Thought you were a rabid coons there for a minute! Sorry! Now where did my hen go? His behavior will not change, you may chase him, kick him beat him, you may win this time, but if you have a real rooster he is thinking....but illl get you next time. Next threat, next attack. My chckens see me as their Shepard, their feeder and protector, no reason to attack me. I walk carefully around them and notice their behavior...where is their head at? If something is going on, I'm the one that needs to adjust. I don't expect to crush his spirit to suit my perception as a lack of respect. I don't think you can alter them anyway, you just have to adapt to them. Use your voice....alot of people don't.
That is absolutely brilliant. A person who knows and understands the animals that they are dealing with. Lots to be learned from this lady. For me anyway.

Hey thank you OK, high praise indeed. I've read so many conflicting ideas on roosters, some of them had my head spinning. Some of the advise....well. I just offer my opinion only, always trying to learn, and sharing experiences can help us all in different situations.
W4w- worked in the er. I started as a phlebotomist, did that for about five years, going to school all the while, finished paramedics and worked as a tech in the er, all the while going to school, graduated and went right into the er, finally as a nurse, and did that for about 13 years! Whew!
