The thread that jchny2000 had concern about has been deleted. I didn't get to read any of it. I suppose I react fast when I hear that God is getting kicked out of yet another location. I drew the conclusion without getting the facts. I did however type "religion" in the search box to see what topics would pop up. I must say that BYC does permit some religion discussion. In fact there is a lot of it. I even found a thread on gun control and that is a very controversial topic right now. I understand why BYC "strongly discourage religious and political topics". This site was set up for folks who are interested in chickens. Not political and religious discussion. That's what I want from this site. However if I chose to say "God Bless America" or "Thank God I got six eggs today "I think it is wrong to censor that. God has blessed me and I will pray for the non believers, and overlook their comments stating their point of view that differs from mine. BYC should not cater to any point of view regarding religion no more than they cater to PETA's point of view and their members who are offended in "meat birds discussions". Someone will have to point out to me if I am mistaken. For now I don't see a zero tolerance regarding God. I can appreciate BYC for keeping the ship headed in the right direction. Lets talk chickens. God bless you all.

Now excuse me while I butcher this deer that GOD blessed me with and I killed with my gun. (sorry bout that atheist, peta, and anti gun people)
It shocked me too, I really enjoy being able to openly wish others a Merry Christmas and send Gods blessing to everyone here for the season of joy. Niftychicken cleared things up for me, It wasn't the reason the thread disappeared. Agreed

I love to talk chickens, and YUMMMM venison!!!! I am looking thru your pictures now and drooling! I may have to actually go out next fall, we have them cross our creek all the time. I saw 3 fawns with one doe this last spring, that was surprising but i know it happens. I used to do shotgun every year but old age ... lazy i guess. Now that they are right here, I almost don't want to take them from the land.

if you google "chicken keepers" in their new google community thing... i do have a site for pictures and sharing stuff... but i come here more than I go there... and it's just me and one other member so far...lol I set it up last week.

long long day today, mail was 45 minutes late to arrive and there was a ton of it. I finished just under the wire, the outgoing truck was fired up and ready to roll... glad I did make it or it's a race to the office where I live, if I can get there by 5... or I have to take the raw mail all the way to Albany... so glad I made it... I hate driving in the dark.

didn't follow up last night, I have 5 eggs from yesterday, and 4 eggs for today. I gave the lawn mower guy 2 dozen eggs to bring home, it's just him and his elderly mom, and I know they appreciate it. He's a farm worker, works 16 hours a day from Spring til now... and he's trying to set up his own little business. he can fix any small motor, even the stuff that sat under water for weeks (from Irene). if he can make a success, he wants goats, and some chickens. I told him I would hatch chicks for him. for free. he was over the moon.

I have to take more pictures of the chicks ~ they have changed so much in the last 3 days. and I see 2 that look like my Blu

, and a group of 4 that are pretty similar to each other, shades of brown... the rest are nicely varied, should make a pretty flock.

I don't post on some of those OT style threads. they are the first to say that it's bare bones, tell it like it is language... but they are downright mean and snarky sometimes. huge turnoff. one person copied a ladies ad from craigslist and they all made fun of her for not knowing that her chickens can survive a New Hampshire mountain winter without an insulated coop and stuff... I found the ad, her phone # was listed (whoever copied and pasted didn't take the whole thing). I called her, she was really nice. I explained that her chickens that she and her family love will be fine, please pull the ad and please come to BYC and learn lots... a few people commented that they appreciated my effort, but it was all "newbies" Not one Old Timer could give a hoot. they think you can't fix stupid... and they're right... can't teach them a thing, but I can help the lovely lady who simply didn't know, and appreciated the knowledge. funny, because most of them claim to be Christian or God fearing / believing folk... seems a might contradictory to not do unto others... it is interesting as well, that the Moderator who reads here hasn't posted a single poem!

Ohh yes, more pictures please! they are adorable. That's kind of you to help him and the craigslist lady too! Forgive my noobie ignorance whats OT stand for? That is really what I love living here. We had an old fashion barn raising when we moved my parents here 10 years ago. I cooked a ton of fresh fried fish, BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, taters, and met some real goodhearted people that live close and really wanted to just be neighborly.. That's how things should be. hahaha!

Yes, the golden rule. Must be able to recite poetry if you wish to post on OK's (Rogers') thread

Sounds like you are feeling better. I'm glad!

OT stands for old timers, who offer a great deal of wisdom and information, but who are occasionally impatient and can be quite set in their ways (as are we all). Santa says to keep spreading the Christmas spirit!

Hey thank you OK, high praise indeed. I've read so many conflicting ideas on roosters, some of them had my head spinning. Some of the advise....well. I just offer my opinion only, always trying to learn, and sharing experiences can help us all in different situations. W4w- worked in the er. I started as a phlebotomist, did that for about five years, going to school all the while, finished paramedics and worked as a tech in the er, all the while going to school, graduated and went right into the er, finally as a nurse, and did that for about 13 years! Whew!

EEGads you were busy! ER is rough, let alone a paramedic. See some awful things that make you appreciate life a lot more. My Aunt in her mid 80s is still in the ER as head nurse. Its a calling. Takes a lot of inner strength to do that job.
OK I agree, X2.. well said, and I loved reading that also! awesome observations

to you ACW!!! Red is my 1st "real rooster" I don't count my meaties. I was really kinda nervous when i first saw my Red and we were taking my babies out of the going home box. soo I asked my dad.. "hmm, Dad look at this one." He burst out laughing and said, "yeppers u got a rooster!" I thought, Ugh. I just knew, cause at 4 weeks, he was much bigger and had a huge rose comb going! We got Red and his Ladies, oh and miss Spike at 4 weeks. (Spike answers to no one) How he would stand up to sleep over his girls as young as his was

. I decided that day EVERYONE better love on him, and NOT ever be afraid of him. Its worked so far. He is flat spoiled rotten, and so far, he has only made his warning sound at me once.. The day i panicked over the molting and grabbing the girls to take pictures

. He didn't challenge and i ignored him completely cause i was so worried over my girls. He still hops on my knee and I love him to pieces.

This might help you W4W. The weight of this hind quarter is exactly 20 pounds. After the bone is removed the large tub total weight was 14 pounds. Thats the meat I will grind and freeze. Roger gets the bone and the smaller tub which combined weighs 6 pounds. I expect that there is a lot more waste.....I mean Roger food when butchering deer. I cut off all of the outside layer of skin to remove any dirt or hair that comes in contact with the meat. Not the most sanitary conditions skinning and quartering a deer in a barn. Also deer are shot to put them down and the area around the wound is bloodshot and gets wasted. Hope this is helpful

Ahh, that is a good amount of meat. You could crack those long bones so Roger can hog the marrow! Thanks for indulging my curiosity. I am mostly interested in this to see how much reward there is for the work and effort. I have romantic ideas of being able to live off the land (survivor instinct?), but really have little practical experience. I collected acorns this autumn and planned on leaching the flour and making some acorn cakes. Before I could use them, every last one of my acorns, and there were quite a few, hatched out a plump grub.

I know insects are supposed to be good protein, but when there's salami in the frige and tuna in the cupboard... guess if I was desperate.

My hubby used to dive for abalone, and to my mind it seemed far too much effort for what you got. It took a looong drive up the coast, free diving 20ft in very cold water, prying the ab off the rock, getting sea sick while recovering at surface, and then the abalone (only 3 allowed at a time, even in your freezer) had to be prepared.... trimmed, sliced and beaten into some semblance of tenderness, until breaded in fried in butter and garlic. Supposed to be a delicacy, but I thought it tasted mostly of butter and garlic! Sure the activity has it's own reward, but after we read about a decapitated local diver (great white victim), it sort of lost it's luster. Hubby's mom sure does miss her abalone though!

The deer seems like a better deal. Although personally, I prefer harvesting chicken eggs!

Aha! In addition to a heart of gold, I have been suspecting that you are the type of person who can be relied on in a pinch! All that and you can back a trailer.
