Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

I'm looking for a BR rooster that crows constantly from 12 AM till 6 AM I plan to name him Sue

wow, W4W and OK, those are sad stories, lucky my Dad was successful in retrieving his Pug from the frozen duck pond when she fell through the ice... I still get freaked out when I think of it...

speaking of Pigeons... this is the Pink Necked Green Pigeon, found in Malaysia, Vietnam and places in that area... not photoshopped... I promise... cool, eh?

anyway, yeah... I'm def in high demand at work... I got someone to cover my route at the last minute, so I did not have to do a double, but that carrier is still sick, so I will have to do a double today, and I will not make the afternoon truck, so I will have to drive to the city with the outgoing mail. kinda bummed knowing that... but I will go to the Trader Joe's in the area afterwards, so it won't be too bad...

time to go! MC, can't wait to hear when they set the eggs so we can start the countdown! this is so cool!!!!

Guys! My granddaddy has a LOT of acerage, and I may be able to keep about 150 chickens back there if we can build a coop that'll keep coyotes and wild dogs out and will hold that many birds. I may be able to have a real egg business!! Any ideas on where to get that many chicks without breaking the bank? And how to sell that many eggs?? I'm so excited!! It may be about a year, though..

WOW.....the chicken feed is what breaks the bank. Plan it carefully. That will be a lot of work. I'm glad for you.

animallover, that sounds like a fun and big project for you to do together! I'll send you hatching eggs in the Spring if you want, for free, I'll even pay for the shipping. mine will be all EE, but should be some really beautiful birds and varying egg colors... you'd be able to tell who the father is after hatch... feathered feet is Archie, no beard or muffs is Royce and plain legs with beard and muffs is Osiris. Si came from a tan egg, I want to put him with Isis. with her blue egg, they will make lovely blue feathered green egg layers. with the barred rocks... you can get blue barred rocks with beards and muffs from Si, or blue br's that lay a green egg from either of the others... I would love for you to hatch some... we'll talk more as you move your project along! Maybe we can hatch out that Rouge Barred Rock rooster that OK needs for his project!

it will, be, but they'll have SO MUCH grass back there, and bugs galore!! And dad and I'll will plant clover and rye, probably. IF everything goes well. My granddaddy is in his 80's, and changes his mind a lot. Once, he had a teddy bear in his truck for 2 years. I asked him for it, and he said no, that he might need it. He gave it to me two days later. I love him so much, and he's a sweet guy, but he is diabetic, has hearing problems, and...probably won't be around too much longer. He's 84, and he went to the local lumberyard (he used to own it, and he still goes a lot). Well, he passed out. He didn't drive for a month afterwards. Poor guy, scared him half to death! Literally. Dad doesn't think he'll be around much longer, but heck I'll miss him! So will dad and Grandma.

Iff I end up selling eggs at the local grocery store (still VERY iffy, I just thought this all out tonight), I'm going to specialize in Rainbow eggs!! Brown, white, Blue, and green! And each carton will contain info about the chickens and that yes, you CAN eat the blue and green eggs

This plan is starting to sound very interesting, especially regarding the ah... "intended recipients" of RBR (Rouge BR) "attentions." Remember what ACW said about the insecure nature of the web, gotta talk in code.

When it comes to govt, less is more as far as I'm concerned. Getting so you can't even wipe your a...ah um... nose, yeah wipe your nose without some oversight committee convening to commission some study to derive the desperately needed regulations because we might miss the targeted nose and poke out an eye instead.

The best thing about the RBRs is that they are unassailable! With all the animal protection groups no one will dare harm a poor li'l sweet fluffy innocent chicken. They will have free rein! Mwahahaha!

This sounds like a great opportunity, but I think it's best to start out slowly and learn as you go. That way problems you may encounter along the way can be solved relatively easily. If you start out with 30 or 50 chickens and increase over time, you can figure out how to market your eggs and breed your own chickens, work out management strategies and the most cost effective way to feed your girls. I know around here, feed is much cheaper if you can buy in large quantities (were talking many hundreds of pounds). You should also check for any regulations in your state and county regarding the labeling and selling of eggs. My state has a regulation for everything. Kids are supposed to have a permit to set up lemonade stand! I do see ads for eating eggs on craigslist, folks sell at farmer's markets, and there are a few signs out along some roadways.

Personally, to get started, I think hatchery pullets are the way to go. The right breeds are excellent layers and a couple of dollars per chick is not very much considering you will not have to deal with the 50% males that come with hatching chicks (although I think that hatching would be really fun, but what do you do with all the poor little boys?). Remember you will have to feed those boys until they are old enough to sex and you probably won't get much return on your money unless someone buys them for meat.

Having multicolored eggs in the carton is a big selling point. People ask to buy eggs from us because they think the eggs are really cool.
