Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

My sister asked if chickens were something I planned. No, they most certainly are not!
Then she asked if I regretted it. No, I do not. I have days (like today) that I want to just give up. Today was actually about the chickens. Between the neighbor and the couple wanting eggs, I am so disgusted. But I love those birds. And knowing how they trust me! They don't have to want to be handled for me to know it. They hear my voice, and run to see me. They crowd my feet when I am in the coop. They lay on their backs dust bathing with me right above them. I am trusted. So is the dog. Maybe it isn't me. Okay, now I am sad. LOL. I do love them. And... I just remembered that I heard some coughing today. I need to remember the Vet RX tomorrow if it continues. This weather is enough to annoy anyone's sinuses! Hoping it was nothing!

So let us recap. I was hoping a JG was going broody, but it was a false alarm. A couple wanted 20 (free) eggs for hatching. I got them together that day, and it was no longer an urgent thing. Maybe they would get them last weekend. Then I had to meet them on Monday or Tuesday. At the last minute, it was today. At the LAST minute, something came up. Not today either. My husband is home two days a week. That is 30-50 hours/week. We had no plans thanks to this woman!! We kept changing them to accommodate her.
Then I decided I would like to try hatching some of my own eggs. Neighbor said she would do it. I think it was W4W that asked if that was a good idea. Ha! NO!!! She came for them today, asked for 2 dozen to hatch for herself (FREE) and wanted me to pay RENT to use her incubator. She even tried telling me I HAD to let her hatch my eggs for me!

Oh MC, how frustrating! I am of the mind that people treat us the way we allow them to. Be polite but firm, be generous but not a doormat. Usually an easy balance, but then you run across people like you're describing, who are unreasonable to an outrageous degree, and it's so shocking that I just sort of freeze up and don't react. I start wondering-- Did they really say that? That can't be what they meant! -- and instead of telling them to shove it, I stay polite and reasonable because I am stunned at the behavior. No matter how many times it has happened, I am always (stupidly) surprised. Well, it only happens one time for each individual, because forewarned is forearmed. The next time they will be told to shove it, reasonably and politely of course, but the message will be clear and I get to keep my equilibrium. Watch out for the crazy people, though. You never know with them!

Motto of the week: No good deed goes unpunished.

Now a little story to cheer you up. This just happened as I was typing. I have been trying to get Mustacheio to get to bed early, but he is, like his mommy, a night owl, and starts perking up around 9 pm. Mornings are a real pain trying to pry the kid out of bed for school. Tonight, he was stalling, talking recipes with dad (the softie) from his Xmas cookbook, and trying his usual tactics of distract and delay. I got a little testy and told him Doggonyou, get to bed! His reply (with sweet sincerity) was "There's no dog on me." A pause, then "That was a really bad joke!" Giggles as he races off to his room.

We tried really hard not to laugh until after he had left the room. We failed. Never can get mad at that kid, he's always been able to charm his way out of it. Keep telling him he's getting older and the cuteness factor is going to wear off soon, but it hasn't. Luckily, he's a really good boy. Pretty smart too, which is undoubtedly part of the problem! Well, 10pm and I'd better go check on him and pretend to be mad so he can pretend to go sleep.

Cheeka, your granddaughter sounds like a love. Great thing to look forward to, having her visit. Maybe she would like a harmonica or little keyboard to start making her own music. Good to encourage her interest when it's so strong at such a young age.

MC there are bad days. make you soooo mad. All my birds make me nuts, but they are mine. You are sooo right they trust you. the love they give us makes it OK. I wont give up keeping chickens again, its been a huge blessing for me... let alone the geese and ducks. I just love them all. Listen to them when they are breathing... hope they are ok.
Tell those heartless people your babies aren't laying till spring and enjoy the babies yourself.

I'm getting together a box of sound makers for my gd, started last night. I have harmonicas, tambourines, whistles, kazoos, left over from my days running arcades (way before the financial work) I kept a few boxes of "junk" bc I knew someday it would come in handy. glad i did... I also have a box of princess diaries and tiny barbie dolls and tiny tonka cars. she loves to cut paper with scissors, she can color on the diary paper and then cut it all up... she's old enough to not put things in her mouth, so she can have some tiny barbies and tiny cars... I have to stop at the local dollar store, and get her some more soap crayons for the bath, so I will look for a flute or maybe a plastic saxophone... they'll have something!

I do not want to leave the house. I do not want to go to work. I want to stay home all day. it's a bit wild outside right now... wind is howling, trees are swaying, and even tho' it's close to 40 degrees, there are some snowflakes swirling about. oh well... it's a short day. I can visit with my friend Ruth for a bit during my route adn be home by 2 ish. time to get going!

AL, such good news! hope she keeps it up!
