Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Wow MC, termites bite the big one! literally... I'm so lucky... no termites here, ever. but we do have bazillions of carpenter ants, they are far enough from the house to keep things safe, but that's only if I stay on top of them... they build huge hills... and they go down like 14-16 feet easily. it's recommended to drill down about 18' and burn them out, but that's prohibitively expensive. I chop the tops off with the bush hog, the ants go nuts... but it keeps them busy all season rebuilding, rather than expanding... the chickens sure do like ant eggs, so their breeding program is regularly interrupted

the chicks roosted tonight for the first time! ever so cute! Peach seemed so frustrated trying to coax them up... they kept running back to the nest, and she would peck them (gently) and move them out, over and over... poor things finally got it tho'! and I got a good shot of the moon last night. oh and a deer... from today...

I bought a nice proven broody EE, who's GLW over amercauna. I'm hoping she will pass on some lacing. And a nice active BR layer. She had some chicks coming up that are EEs. Favorelle bantam over amercauna. Should be interesting lol. Anywho, so I'm excited!

oooh nice frizzle!!!

Thanks! He is actually not mean, and has some nice color. I'm going to get better pictures later today.

He has scaley leg mites and so his legs are a little knarly because of it. So I'm going to give him a good once over when he settles a bit. He woke us up at 530 this morning. Lol. My quarantine pen is right beside our bedroom on my porch.

So hot today, the girls seemed to be panting off in one corner of the yard, I put a waterer closer to them as they are free ranging. My husband and I are both like...why dont they just go back to the coop in the shade and get a drink...but

We had the same storm yesterday Cheeka as we went to newburgh for the day yesterday. My best friend passed a few years ago and we try to visit her on her birthday (yesterday). We make a nice day of it, visit a local farm, take pictures etc. It was crazy because we had just been putting the kids in the car and suddenly rain drops that are the size of dimes started pelting us after hearing thunder crack. Nice part was it cooled down the temperature by like 13 degrees . How is everyones garden's etc? I lost all my peas to a bunny but I have some healthy looking tomato and squash that I can't wait. I did pumpkin for the chickens this year . Cucumbers are out of control. I just finished the last of my lettuces today.

my girls are doing the panting thing too, wings spread to catch a breeze... had to make Pie to lure them back inside for the 2nd round of thunderstorms. they all boogied back to the dome for round 1, except for Peach and the chicks, they rode it out in the middle of the lilac...

Mylee spent the day at Grammy's in the pool, came home really really tired, and developed that

not so pleasant attitude that overtired 3 year old kids get... so she's already tucked in bed, with some chocolate milk and a movie. I went up to check on her after 15 minutes and she was sound asleep. but before she was fresh, we enjoyed some fresh fruit together, chicken approved "Pie"

the girls spent the majority of the day outside, just in for the two heavy downpours, and the chicks did some ranging amongst the big gals and did just fine. Peach is always nearby, and that is often enough to put off the others... as tiny as she is, she is formidable!

my garden is mostly herbs, dill, basil, parsley, thyme, and then there's garlic and scapes, and scallions. I used to do all the regular stuff like tomatoes, cukes, peppers and squash... but I always ended up with way too much. I get all that stuff from friends and customers in trade for herbs and eggs. anything else I want, I can get from the local farms. Middleburgh has several large farms still operating and suppling the local markets. and they have their own stands... and there are large numbers of small farms with stands...my all time favorite is Nicky and Paulina's ~ they are an awesome couple, from Romania, got married when she was 14 and he was 15. they've been married near on 50 years. seriously hard working people with an entirely organic farm.
