Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Welcome Whoops! This is a great thread to belong to! Lots of kind, caring, knowledgeable, and very funny people on here! I think most of us acquired our BR's before we knew about Roger, and what we have learned and the tales we can tell! Brush up on your poetry and your pie making skills, you may need them in the future.

Jchny-how sweet! Love the names! I named by roosters, caccitore, kiev, cordon bleu, and parmesean. Should have named some of them BBQ since that is where they ended up!

Cheeka-Love the selfie! The coops look nice and toasty, bring on the winter. Not too much though!

I gave away a quad yesterday. 3 assorted pullets, and one cockerel. Slightly reducing my numbers from like 39 or something. One brown laying OE, one blue copper Marans (which will lay the darkest egg because I didn't keep that one), one BR (hehe), and one black copper Marans (which will be in competition with the blue for darkest egg). I did specify that if they did lay darker eggs than the ones I kept, we would have to trade.

You should have seen the look on the BR's face when I put her in the cage with "them". She is in the elite group at the farm. Not one of the "outsiders". To show her displeasure, she laid a nice egg for her new owner. I guess she showed me!

Here is a soon to be new addition to my menagerie. Not sure if her name will be Thelma or Louise. I will have to wait until I get the other one to decide!

Will she be a milker or just a flock mate?

Yes, I have had an awakening, reading about the exploits and plots of Roger. On the plus side, she's pretty.

And SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, what a cute little baby goat!

Quote: Thank you! We are so excited to finally have some. We traveled to the northeast end of the state to get these guys.
All our farms locally are just insane prices on their calves. The NE corner is full of old fashioned Amish farmers who are fair, reasonable and honest.
DH was able to work out a trade for the 3 we got since they are all bulls.
One is holstein, the other 2 are holstein/jersey cross, and I like the mutts better already. The holstein is younger, smaller and already a stinker.
I was totally shocked to find out this family did not own a single chicken, turkey, NONE. No birds!
They barter their beef for what they need. Really enjoyed meeting this family, and plan to visit again!

omg I love the calves and the goat...! I want a menagerie. (like I don't have one...

today was weird, because it's all done... I had nothing to do but housework. I decided to take the day off... and did nothing practically all day. spent some time with the gang, but in their pens...played on the computer, and re-watched Once Upon a Time in Wonderland from the beginning 5 hours of whimsical television... when I'd get numb from sitting, I'd hit pause and take the dogs out walking. it was fun but kind of boring. cooked a mean roast pork with potatoes and carrots and peas - I'll be eating that for a couple of days...

Jersey cattle are supposed to have a very sweet temperament. Also, they are pretty. Where I grew up, the farmers around us had Red and Black Angus, and Angus crosses for beef. Those things were scary to me, the way they lumbered about. They seemed a whole different creature than any sweet dairy cow, and wild as (really big and clumsy) deer. One time, my mother was in the house looking through the sliding glass patio door, and right out there in our yard were several of the neighbor's Angus bulls, staring at her through the glass.

She said she was afraid to reach out her hand for the telephone to call him to come get them, thinking it might provoke the bulls somehow.

However, she did call the neighbor, and he came and shooed them back home.

I think your calves are much cuter. Enjoy your beef adventure :)

Aww, poor Mom! They are really cute thank you

I love all the babies

Jerseys are much smaller and more gentle.
But they are all bulls. I am very, very careful of large livestock. I will lead train and handle them daily to be sure they are imprinted.
We will be castrating ASAP so they stay calm and safe. I wanted bottle babies so I can raise them my way.
No touching the head PERIOD. Any stimulation to the horn pad encourages butting and play.
Bulls love to butt, part of play and maturing. I am way too little (5 foot, 100 lbs) to fight off a butting bull!

You needed that time. Sometimes you just have to slow down a little
