Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Its the same here, no idea how many chickens. I have birds coming and going all the time.
I would guess at least 60 chickens, 50 quail, 15 or so ducks, 2 peafowl.
14 geese 7 guinea... I bet I forgot some.
3 goats, a pig, 1 cow... eeeieeeioooo

So I'm thinking about getting some chicks online for the first time any breeds I should look into

! definitely Barred Rocks. no flock is complete without those monsters beauties...! Easter Eggers are fun as well, and add lots of variety to future egg baskets. lots of other factors to consider such as your location - if you live in a climate like mine... where you endure severe cold, you want birds that are cold hardy, and have small combs/wattles to prevent frostbite. or if you are in the hot zone, large combs for heat dispelling. bantams or large fowl...? "regular" or ornamental...? can you keep roosters where you live? if not, it's worth paying the extra $ to have sexed pullet chicks - and you still may end up with a roo... build your coop large as chickens are addictive and you will probably want more at some point, but regardless... coops and runs can't be "too big", only too small... good luck and let us know what you order, we'll keep you company while you wait for eggs!

the total # here is 51, including the Fosters... I did add them all to the total because I do not think I will ever hear from them again (at least before Spring anyway...) but 13 of them are roosters, so 38 hens and pullets, Silkie is too young to lay yet, and bantam Marans Esther is close... but also a bit young. I think 2 out of 4 Cochins are laying, the LF Marans and EE Veronica are laying, and a handful of my older birds have resumed laying 2 or so times a week. guess yesterday was just the day for everyone to skip. I was finding the eggs in the afternoon anyway, so that would make sense... winter can't end soon enough! the temps have been so frigid... I can't blame them for withholding. today should actually hit the 20's and we have a warm week ahead, with temps in the 30's and even a few days predicted to hit 40! all the snow will melt away - free range will be more enjoyable for them...

ahhhhh I had to come to the office today..... I could def get use to full time work at home but my boss would never allow that. I'm going to push my luck today and go home at lunch since I have 3 hrs of meetings this afternoon that can be done via phone.

Jchny - I wish you lived closer so I could see your operation. I want everything you have (except maybe the quail.... what do you do with quail??).

Welcome - grayed!!!!! I love my Easter Eggers. I also have some birds just for fun (a polish and 2 silkies). There is so much to choose from but I guarantee whatever you get you'll be happy with. I thought all these chicken people were just plain nuts til I got my own. It only took me a day to fall in love with my group!

not bad at all today, the mail was late, but not so late that Ms So and So could cry about it. I finished early, had time to stop at my elderly friend and spend a couple of hours with her and still make it home more than an hour before dark! Ruth and I had a nice visit and we took care of all of her bills and mail. she's doing well, and taking my advice. do what you can, when you can, sit when you want to and especially when you need to... no pressure, no stress. but don't be silly, cuz if you don't use it, you lose it! her place was tidier than normal, she looks good, she's eating well and keeping warm during this polar vortex! she can't wait for it to warm up some, she's been pretty much housebound. but -25 below or colder is just too cold. I'm glad I made the time, I haven't been able to spend those couple of hours lately - most days, I'll pop in for 20 - 30 minutes between routes. keeps her going...

came home to 5 Eggs! and one is small, new egg size, and it is a shade of brown that I do not have. I have a second Cochin laying for sure! one definitely lays a powder white, this one is cafe au lait - very pretty and smooth. I should make a basket pic.

I served up extra goodies for everyone, but really made a production of it in the Foster Pen. I'm so pleased that someone has finally resumed! perfect light brown egg. so pretty.
