Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

hello i am wishing4wings son we just had a 24 hr power outage and the first thing i did when i got home was turn on a light like it was brand new technology. just thought i would get you up to date on the happenings.
Thanks for the update. Hope life gets back to normal soon for you all. W4W is a great contributor and looking forward to her return.

I was wondering where w4w went! Hey! What's that on your chickens face! Must be one of them there mustachio chickens...I've heard of them.
Our power was out for 2 weeks with sandy....flipping that switch and getting light is amazing. The best thing to have is a solar rechargeable flashlight....so handy!

She made us lots of pie
Spike proclaims TO THE NEST! with a cry!
As the Peacock cries rang out
2 new eggs came about!

Ah, I see Mustacheio has struck again. Instead of doing his homework! Now I will have drag the little procrastinator out of bed in a few hours, since he just finished said homework over an hour past bedtime.

I'm watching you, Mustacheio! (My little sweetie!

Yes, power out for over 36 hours. (I know ACW, you're thinking, 36 hrs, big deal!) Biggest pain is no water from the well. I was up before 7 Sunday morning in the downpour, filling buckets and big tubs from a downspout so we could flush. I am always appreciative of the ability to flush. This was the longest outage the boys have experienced. You would have thought they had been marooned on an island or something! (Remember Tom Hanks in Castaway, lying on the hotel floor, clicking the light on and off?) We are all technology addicted. "When are we gonna get there?" was replaced with "When is the power coming on?" An even bigger pain was that #1son had a large term project due today (Mon) that required use of the computer and internet. We ended up imposing on some friends who live in town. They and their neighbors were flaunting their electrical largess with xmas decorations! I'm just so happy that I now have a cold refrigerator and lovely hot water flowing from the tap. Strange to feel relieved to be able to do dishes.

The chickens were unfazed by the ordeal. Carried on laying 6 eggs per day.

Cheeka, can't wait to see chickie pix tomorrow!

I like Australorps too. Don't have any, and don't see getting them anymore. I am thinking I want to switch my flock to just Marans and Ameraucanas.
So, speaking of power outages, I had an exciting day yesterday, too. The tub was backed up, so I put down the Draino. Went to wash it down, and the water didn't come on. I tried again after filling a pitcher in the kitchen a few times, and the water wouldn't get hot. The hot and cold had reversed. THEN the water wouldn't shut off, and the tub was still backed up. I tried to find the main shut off, and couldn't. Couldn't get DH on the phone, so I ran next door to the hunting camp. Mr. Sexy came to the rescue. DH came home, and we went to Lowe's.
roll.png
The guy could not stop telling DH how much work this was going to be. The bathroom was built when indoor plumbing was invented. Everything is old, and copper pipes.
So... DH was able to turn water on in the kitchen (he actually seemed SURPRISED I wanted him to turn it on!

)
Next was TC and Wal Mart. Turns out TSC has a lot of stuff for chickens I didn't know about because they put it about six isles down! Blue Kote, big (and cheaper!!) bags of DE, and several other things. I was just wandering around, and discovered it.
And .... Ready for this? Are ya ready? Ya sure?? Wal Mart got in ACV with Mother this week!!!!!!!!

Ugh old plumbing is awful. good luck with that I feel your pain with copper pipes. PVC is way cheaper, don't let people scare you.
I am really awful at the feed stores. Hubby gets so mad at me cause i wander off especially during "chick days" hehe!
I go into every isle of the animal feeds, read labels, look at the "new arrival" stuff.
You will LOVE the FF, its just awesome, i am so not joking on that. cuts the feed in half, no waste, they don't stink anymore. even the poop boards!
They look so shiny and healthy I am just impressed. I took in 2 pullets (BR and EE) that were stripped bare from being over mated, they have their feathers back and are just beautiful now.

I truly believe FF saved my little runt piglet, Roxy. She is almost 5 months old now, and maybe 35-40 pounds,
Bacon is 6 months, my older pig and is easily 250. I worm, vaccinate, bathe and care for every animal here.
When i got serious with FF, I started Roxy on it and an egg with each feeding 2x a day. (Bacon too, he loves it!)
she gained most of her weight the last 3 weeks! Her fur is growing in now, and she has a belly!
We got her free and i just couldn't leave her at that farm.(she is meant to be a pet/breeder in the future)
I had intended to buy more piglets from him, after looking at the stock (what a horrible filthy place)
Told him they weren't what i wanted, looking for durocs. Still trying to be "nice"...
Every piglet there was terrified. his kids were chasing them and throwing things at them!?!?! Where do children learn that its ok to be like that...
Then i saw Roxy hiding in the barn. I said, whats with that one? He went over grabbed her, and said, here take her before she dies on me.
So tiny, she was just skin and bone. not even 10 pounds
somad.gif
I took her and left.
Ya, they are "just animals" UGH
old.gif
but they are a living thing. Even if they are meant for food or just provide wool and eggs they deserve respect and good treatment. I hold my chickens, ducks, geese, and pet them. scratch my pigs ears, rub their backs and bellies.. brush out my alpacas and rub their necks. OK, stepping off the soapbox

I love it! I haven't been able to keep my thought on track for so long now... but I have an easyish week so maybe the chicks will inspire something! Great Contribution jchny!! and I'm with you as far as animals go, they definitely need all the proper care and attention, especially if they are going to be our food, provide a bit of themselves for food (eggs), or provide us with their hair, fur, fleece, feathers, skin... for clothing or cover... all comes down to respect... the better they are cared for, the better they provide for us!

W4W, so glad you are back! it was nice to hear from DS, love his handle and his avatar pic! very clever ~ and even if he was supposed to be doing his homework, it was quite thoughtful of him to pop over here to let his Mom's friends know that all is well! I like thoughtful young people... kinda rare... he might not think it's necessary, but he deserves a big hug!

MC, nice that you have someone easy on the eyes to come to the rescue! my neighbor is grizzly, stooped and has a terribly chauvinistic outlook on life. I'd rather not call him... y'know?? I have the old copper pipes too. there is a "flex-pipe" product, pretty cheap, that is quite narrow, but has the ability to swell greatly and not burst. I may convert to that come Spring... saw one with a chunk of ice the size of a mini basketball so the pipe looked like this: --------O-------- and it didn't leak, break... or anything. good sales pitch.

TIME to LEAVE and FETCH the CHICKS!!!

Alright, now you guys have got me seriously considering the fermented feed. I had read a bit about it, but was happy being lazy with my feed-em-crumbles method. But if Walmart has mothered ACV, then I will have to go and check it out. Shhh....
hide.gif
.... not too loud about Walmart. Spot thinks she should get to go since Roger gets to!

About Australorps, love the way they look and excellent temperament, but my girl Matilda (ya know, Waltzing Matilda) was my only hatchery pullet that got broody this summer. No eggs for a few weeks. Could be good or bad. Depends on what you want. My BO is a more reliable layer, but my sample size is very limited! Only one of each!
lol.png

Show a pic of Roxy. Growing up we had just about every farm animal going, but no pigs (dad said they're too smart, cause trouble) and no sheep (too dumb, cause trouble). Do the pig and alpacas get along? My girlfriend raised Durocs for 4H, and boy did they stink. If fermented feed can reduce poopy stink, it's got to be magic!

Waiting on Cheeka's chickies!

Back in the seventies I lived in a house with no electric, and no hope of ever getting it soon. Water was a hand pump at the Backdoor, and in the kitchen sink which is really uptown. Outhouse. It did have a great southern facing picture window and 2 seats...hahahaha...no waiting. At this place, we just finished the hookup for the gas run 15k generator and heaters...love me that modern technology. Yeah, if they had restored power in three days I would have cheered.
Sorry to hear about your plumbing...I had an old house once where the pipes where poured into the slab...which rusted out. Thought the water heater had gone bad, but when the water company called me asking if I had gotten a pool.....well, that clinched it. Had to replumb the whole place...but PVC pipe is great! Just fit it before you glue it. And get a good dremel. Easy as an omlet with egg shells in it.
Here comes some rain, cold rain.
I do think the benefits of ff are well worth the extra effort. I keep two buckets going...ice cream tubs and nail buckets....feed one half a day, then fill it and add some water. My chickens tend to wolf it down and go range. If i give them dry they start choking and cough. It helps to be able to lift the inner bucket up and hook it to drain. The crumbles can be fermented, it just is sloppier. Some have used PVC pipe cut in half length wise as a feeder. Their feathers look great, thick and fluffy and shiny. They are like 600 wt down pillows. Even one hen who had her neck feathers clipped, didn't have them pulled out, just cut ends. No one has ratty feathers from breeding so far. Don't know about the actual smell of poop, since they are outside all day anyway, but no real smell in the coop. I am moving the set up to the house for the winter...so I can feed from the poarch (lazy me) but the bucket I pulled from the snow drift was still bubbling. The chickens love it.
