Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Glad the bread was enjoyable...so easy! The same recepie can become rolls...if you roll it out as for bread sticks, chop them into roll size pizza and form them into rolls. The trick is, the second time you handle them be gentle and don't over do, so they stay tender. Give them time to rise, then hot oven and just till brown. Want cinamon rolls? Roll out the chunks flattish, brush with butter, sprinkle with sugar and cinamon and roll up like a log....rest, rise, bake. Dust with some powdered sugar right out of the oven. Same recipes for pizza dough, except te second rise you handle it roughly so the gluten will be firm and hold lots of stuff, use corn meal when you roll it out for a cripsy tasty crust. I have sticker shock when I see baked goods in the store. I guess you pay for the time and energy to bake...package, transport....enough for recipes.

Alright, you might have won me over with the cinnamon rolls.

It's raining and windy and cold outside, so baking might not be so bad, especially if it's cinnamon rolls. I will add walnuts to mine. Mmmmm..... Do you slice the individual rolls from the log before or after the last rising? Wish I didn't have such a sweet tooth, though. A disinclination to cook sure helps to keep me from porking out on the sweets!

Just got back from my dad's (the old farm where I grew up) and picked about 30lbs of sour green apples. The stores sell the Granny Smith's too green; they're much better when ripe. Thinking an apple crumble might be necessary too. Can't let those apples go waste! (Instead they will go to waist!) Saw a herd of turkeys, about 30 head, only one tom. Dad says the rest of the toms, about 20 or so, hang out together in a group and wreak havoc. Turkey bachelor parties!!! They come right around the house now since there is no longer a dog on the property.

Apples, walnuts, raisons...anything like that is only good for you. After the first rise, you can cut strips, tear chunks off, whatever you like. I tend to quickly roll it out to a rectangle, cut strips, then roll the strips out, slicing those into about what size each roll should be. That small piece gets the butter and spice and raisons or nuts, then roll it up pinch the seam closed, ready to put on a cookie sheet and let rise again. I use a dusting of powdered sugar, because its not so goopy as icing, and frankly, that little bit of sweetness is usually all it takes to satisfy a sweetness craving. Hardly any empty calories at all. I think the last time I priced a loaf of cinamon raison bread, tiny loaf, it was close to five dollars.....wha???? No way!

Ugh woke up and cannot sleep... I am trying to organize the Indiana thread here on BYC. There's 2 of them

both OPs are inactive. Just a huge opportunity there, sharing of information. So i talked to a moderator and am trying to get a few more involved. I guess the trick is to have 4-5 others than can update and edit as "contributors" if someone quits. One thing that was hard for us to find was a feed mill, took me a month. There's no local breeders, and no one even sells eggs around here! (hehehe gonna fix that!) Hoping it will help others that are just getting started. I am seeing more chickens in peoples yards and I bet everyone's starting to realize we need to rethink what the grocery stores offer us. Anyone else look around at other peoples yards when you drive somewhere, and think ooooo! Look at that shed with the windows, that would make a good coop?

A good local thread is an excellent resource. I read mine all the time, but don't post too much because they are all incubating addicts

and I am at my limit but enjoy hearing about all the different breeds. If I ever needed advice or new chickens, I could definitely count on help from these wonderful folks. I got my two Ameraucanas from a local BYC breeder and could trust the health of the birds. (Although STILL WAITING impatiently for the first eggs from them !!)

If you want to recruit members to your thread, check out the New Member Introductions in the Social section of the Forums tab. It might take a little time, but if you checked every day, you could invite the newbies to the thread you are trying to get going. It only took a quick scroll down the page to find this person from IL. They would probably love hearing from someone close by.

Hi, from Baileyville, IL

Good luck!

I never look in people's yards. Really!
Okay, maybe I have once or twice... Going down my road. Which has two houses.

Yeah, I think we all do it. Heck! I spent too long looking at my desk. It is all I can do to not bring it outside, and add some wire!
Speaking of which ...

This is the coop I am working on. I really do want opinions. It is 8X2. If I stand it up, it will house 4 chickens. I will then have to add a ramp. The run will be ... Big. At least 8X10, but probably bigger. I will have an external nest box, and am considering keeping one side underneath sectioned off for storage.
Then thee are the possibilities of it on its side. No ramp needed, and that is hardware cloth on the bottom. I can add a door on at least one section that can be opened in the Summer for hot summer nights .... And days. I can also use the legs as a frame to extend the size to 8X4, allowing more birds. I will put it up on blocks to keep it off the ground.
So any opinions on standing up, laying down, keeping the hardware cloth (less staple removing!) or getting rid of it, and having a bigger coop...
Also, I have questions. The shed blocks most winds and rain. To keep this benefit,, how far away from the shed can I move the coop?

Good news! You know those Ameraucanas my mom (W4W) was talking about? well the older (we think) of the two half sisters is sitting on the nest right now!!! I'm excited, but W4W says I'm not allowed to see her on the nest 'cause it'll disrupt her. now I'm going to go into my room (which has a great view of the chicken yard) and see if she's off.

jchny2000 best luck for eggs.
