Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Ummm ... I have a problem. Red (the dreaded rooster) is fighting I think. I know how easy it is for his comb to bleed, and no one is acting weird. I have seen blood on the dry feeder (as opposed to the FF) twice before. The first time wasn't too smeared. The second was a little distressing, but today! Good grief the whole bottom is bloody. Like no gaps of clear/white. Just red all the way around the bottom of the feeder. I have never seen any fighting going on.. Even introducing new members to the gang doesn't get bad.
The only way I have of separating him (the pen I was using is torn apart, waiting to be built into an outdoor coop/brooder/quarantine pen) is to put him in with my laying pullets (and any prospective layers) and shut the door between the two sides of the coop. I would do this when I leave Monday. The girls could have their nest boxes, but no roosts (that side has pine chips. They will live!) and the other two boys can keep the rest of the girls happy in the sand pit. But I am afraid that would make Red a target when they are re-united a few days later.

Okay, what should I do about fighting I don't see, and what, if anything, should I do about Red? I assume it is him bleeding.

Yeah, I thought she probably exceeded maximum capacity....but didn't want to say it. Good she's OK! Mcc you should separate those bad boys for now....ESP if gone you won't be able to help them....they may not be able to stay together anyway. Don't want to loose an eye!

I think the problem is solved. When their big butts knocked the roost down a week or so ago, there was a screw I could not get out. I think someone- or several someones- was cutting their comb open on the screw.

awww, Roger! Santa will send Cupid down to escort her personally... She can't miss out, She can ride on Santa's shoulder... I'll have my family put out some meal worms along with the cookies ~ my granddaughter will pick some grasses for her, it's going to be Grand!

I'm so glad to hear that you found the bleeding issue MC, my boys scrap from time to time, but it's nothing more serious than a pinched comb, just a tiny bit of blood, and it's less frequent now that Peach is laying ~ Si doesn't have to protect her every move as she is an accepted contributor to the flock. a screw is a nasty thing to catch yourself on, but it means that things are certainly more peaceful within your gang.

snow snow snow... wind wind wind... a few small areas of "damage" in the enclosure from the wind, but it only took minutes to fix, some of the vinyl shifted with the wind, but once it was refitted it was really nice inside. Peach was in the apple coop, nesting in an awesome bed of fresh hay, she looked quite content, perping quietly, a few of the older gals came in while I was visiting with the roof up, no escapees because it was snowing pretty hard, and I shooed them out so Peach could have her privacy. if she's going to move in here, which it appears that she has... I was going to set up her food and water in there... so I went inside to get supplies, and got sidetracked scooping cat litter. the cats litter room is a workshop room off the garage, and the dome is just outside this rooms window. all of a sudden I hear Peach singing the egg song. followed by a chorus of clucking from the older gals. I just had to run back out and see. another perfect egg, her 3rd. and she was back in the enclosure, strutting her stuff with the big chickens. I'd have to go back and re-read to see if I finished the saga of Peaches 2nd egg, but anyway, she did lay one that night, from the roost, it was cracked, which prompted me to pick up the new hay bales for cushioning in case it happens again. Plus, it makes it much more cushy for laying. she won't use the nest box. I hung out with them inside the dome for about a half an hour, just fussing around and visiting. it was so noisy and blustery outside, but man, that dome is excellent! earlier in this post, I said it was nice in there... well, that's how I felt after fixing all the drafty spots. Spending more time later with the storm at it's worst, I'm confident that this set up will stand the test of time. My plan is to actually expand it come Spring, and add one more coop for when the chicks are ready to be moved in. they can live in the portable run once they are feathered. my car mechanic is a good friend of mine and he will bend me some pipe, it will be really easy to add sections.

I only got 2 eggs by 4:00, peewee's the both of them. Peaches egg and a BR, it's Wilma who lays the peewee, the other BR egg is consistently larger. and I finally saw Betty climb out of the nest, leaving a nice med/lg egg. I had every intention of going back out, but I laid down on the couch to close my eyes for a half hour, and woke up 3 hours later. oh well... lol DAY OFF Tomorrow!

I'll be leaving right after breakfast for the North Pole. Looking forward to my new opportunity with Santa's sled team. See you all when I get back. Wish me lots of treats. ROGER

Dang Roger... I hauled that killer 50 pound pumpkin up to the roof because Spike insisted it was good luck!
Ugh, guess I better give it to the birds here. Maybe spike will text pictures back so you get to see it anyways.

Roger roosted on the neighbors roof next to the chimney. She is stubborn. I'm trying to get her to call the whole thing off. I called Santa and told him to prepare a backup plan just in case. He says the deer can still go if necessary so no worries.

Good Morning Everyone! I slept til 8:30! I don't know what's up with all the extra sleeping I have been doing now that my schedule isn't such a killer. I have all this time to get stuff done, and I do... but I get so sleepy. I'm not a good napper.

the chicks little tails are popping out now, but I have one who is either slow to develop or is rumpless. and another who has to be a slowbie as her little tail just popped out this morning. their new feathers are coming in nicely, and very pretty, although it certainly is no indicator of what they will look like in a couple of months... EE's hold many surprises, don't they W4W? the Big Gang was happy to see me finally... I felt so badly for being so late, all of the waterers were frozen, so when I appeared with a bucket of somewhat hot water, they were so happy and drank heartily. zero eggs, so I did just get 2 yesterday.

We are getting mega rain this morning and it's windy. Fingers crossed for the power to stay on. Hubby's brother is arriving from Maui today and nephew from New York. They will drive up from San Francisco, stop here for lunch, and continue on northward to grandma's house. Hope there's no flooding! Last time my hubby tried to head north to see his mom, the Russian river had flooded and their house was cut off. We'll all go visit on Christmas day. Mustacheio insisted on being home Xmas eve and morn. He wants to say hi to Roger!! Hope she can fulfill her dream.

Have been getting 7 eggs pretty much every day, but yesterday only 4. The night before, we had a terrible storm blow through with lots of lightening and thunder, quite an event for this area. It shook the house!! Apparently a disturbance like that will put them off laying. Can't blame them really. Kept me awake for quite a while. My boys slept right through, of course. Ah, to be young again!

Cheeka, I think it's good you are getting what must be much needed rest. Not even the most lovely pair of paisley Muck boots can alleviate all the stress you must be feeling over being so busy! The chicks look great. So cute with the little sprouts of chest feathers coming out. I see some blues and golds and maybe a black & white? Wonder how the little yellow will turn out. Hope jchny gets her camera fixed so we can see her babies. 16??!! Maybe Roger can talk to Santa and ask for a new camera for her!

Yikes! News is reporting flooding between here and the city. Hope it doesn't keep the relatives from coming. The boys, particularly the younger, are soooo excited to see their cousin. He is their only first cousin. Plenty of aunts and uncles, but no kids. Glad I had two, but more than that would have been tricky due to my advanced years. Haha! Had to have more than one, otherwise who would they have around to complain about their parents?!
