Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Finally!!!!! My ladies have been really loud in the last week and the dog goes rushing out to protect them (with no need but he likes to be involved) and now 8 weeks after I got them (they are now around 22 weeks) I found my first egg in the next box - my husband reckons I made more noise when I found it than Dahlia did when she laid it ! Then the next down Snowdrop laid a soft shell egg - I will let her off as it's her first attempt ! Here's to cake making

Feels great, doesn't it? Congrats!

After almost a week flat on my backside, I'm finally up and around. Much to Spot's dismay, I took some pics yesterday.

Monkey (EE) , Spot (embarrassed), and Biscuit's tail

Spot looks so small and you can see her yellow skin.

Peach (BO), Biscuit's tail again, and Spot raiding the garden. (Don't tell hubby! Blame it all on the raccoons!)

Every time Spot runs or shakes, feathers fall off! Poor sad little tail.

Of course the things off limits are always irresistible.

None of the others are molting.

Sadly, Biscuit missed Roger's shower. She really needs one!

Supposed to be a WHITE Leghorn.

Who you talkin' 'bout?

Yea!! Congratulations... and while your talking cake... the girls will expect a Pie as a reward!

got to the feed store, got Blue Kote, and some safflower seeds to lift her spirits... she had a feather stuck in the wound, and it's in the pic I will post
sickbyc.gif
but it washed right out when I cleaned the wound to treat it. I used a soft cloth to "warm soak" the tissue for about 10 minutes, she peeped quite cheerfully the whole time. I coated it kind of heavily with ichthamol, which is the best stuff, and I'm annoyed with myself for not remembering last night that I have a tube... and then I did spray a light coat of Blue Kote for added measure. I'll wash and repeat 2X a day til she's healed. then when I reintroduce her, I will coat her with either Vicks vapor rub or something like ichthamol, that smells like black tar and tastes dreadful. this way, if others were pecking at her, they will be deterred from restarting the behavior. it's already looking much better, although the pic I have is rather gross!!! it's already narrowing. I thought she was going to lay an egg, as she had made a nest for herself, and she was clucking her fool head off... but it turns out that she does NOT like the vacuum cleaner noise.

so this is her grody injury before cleaning and treatment,

this is how it looks from the top, after treatment, with her wing in place. you can see that it is below her right wing, which makes me think that she got cut by a toenail and it just opened and got pecked at...

rear view, black is from the ichthamol and blue kote...

she's happily building a nest, and she does use the perch (curtain rod....) she can walk under it without touching, it's an odd angle, but a nice large crate for one bird...

and the chicks for good measure, there were more on the front perch, but they hopped down when I walked up... chickens...

W4W, your pictures were much more enjoyable, Spot is so cute despite her molt... Si is pining for Peach... hope she heals really fast

Bluecote is fine...I think it'll be OK. Sorry guys, got pneumonia on top of flu..,went home on o2. Really bad but couldn't stay in there...that hospital was trying to kill me...worst care ever had. Have back up plan seriously?....now husband getting all sorts of horror stories about that place. I told the rt he was full of BS....which he is. I know, I started out real calm, but got fed up after too much. I am amazed at the lack of basic....yes...it will all be reported.
Hope all is well at that end!

Been wondering where you were. Long days at work for me and little time for me on here but have not noticed any comments from you for a few days. Glad you are OK

Roger looks just like that picture of Spot. My other BR has not lost a feather. She also seems to have slipped a few notches in the pecking order since this molt. Stays clear of the other birds. First one on the roost tonight. I think she feels ugly.

I've been wondering about you too. Poorly run hospitals are hazardous. Call a local TV station or newspaper and get them to do an expose on that place. Glad you made it home and hope you get well quickly.

Cheeka, isn't it amazing how they can recover from something that looks so nasty? Hopefully Si's attention will be taken up by some of the new girls this spring. He probably doesn't even have spurs yet.

Maybe something about the big personality goes with extreme molting. I've never had a chicken lose all its feathers at once like this. And in winter? Spot has retained her #2 ranking, which is actually more of a co-#1 rank shared with the Leghorn. No one messes with Spot, but I've noticed she has been keeping away from human contact and does not want to be picked up at all. Usually she's underfoot (aka a nuisance) and doesn't mind being handled. Maybe the pin feathers are uncomfortable. She's been hunkering down between the BO and EE to stay warm. I'd make her a scarf, but she'd probably eat it.
