Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

snow snow and more snow... it will snow through next Tuesday. this is today's snowstorm, at times a whiteout.

poor little apple coop... buried, but insulated...the lower part of the roof is mid-thigh deep snow, the one deep print is where i kneel down to lean inside to collect eggs. that roof panel is hinged, and just lifts up.

Cheeka, that stinks! We are supposed to get it again Sunday.

Up to 12 inches! I am sooo very done with winter. Been busy building and adding on, getting the huge group of birds this Sunday from my Dad-in-laws friend. She may wait with the storm coming, not sure... Found about 15 eggs and my missing Muscovy hen today, she has been squeezing thru the fence and laying behind the air compressor in the shed. "Huey" is a very shy girl, and i thought something had got her! So I started to search.. WOW. So I am going to gather them all tomorrow and put them in the bator! Huey is a really quiet, docile duck. She let me actually look under her, just a few hisses and didn't even try to nip. Told my DD she really needs to rename the girls

The other 2 hens Donald and Squawk are laying but in the nest boxes. then they are right back out with the drake, Stanley. I made sure I had a few dozen eggs back in the fridge, the rest are getting set.

Brrrrr.... Stay warm you guys. Spring is definitely here at my place. The grass and weeds are growing and much is already going to seed. We played tourist yesterday and took the boys on a tour of Alcatraz on what just happened to be the 50th anniversary of the day the prison closed and the last of the convicts were removed. I'll post some pics later. It was really neat, and a sobering look at how crime really pays. We also saw one of the America's Cup racing boats (team Oracle) out for a practice on the bay. Amazing how fast they go. It was a rare beautiful day in San Francisco. (A hint for would-be visitors- don't come to SF in the summer. It's foggy, windy, and cold. Fall is best.)

7 eggs today, and I think one is a double yolk. The Leghorn finally came back on line after 2 days off, and her egg is suspiciously large!

Honk-honk to Paddy!

Oh dear, just realized it is now Sat, but I am writing this as if it's still Fri. Got to follow Cheeka's avdice about getting to sleep!

R double yolks pretty rare????? If they r cool!!!!!!!!

I think maybe 'uncommon' more than rare. The chickens' cycle is set up to lay an egg every 26 hrs or so. Some are more like every 2 days. Sometimes things happen that interrupt the laying cycle, and two ova (yolks) get wrapped inside a single shell. It's more common with young hens that are beginner layers. Some individual chickens are prone to laying doubles and have them quite frequently, but they're not good for breeding because the chicks inside don't develop properly and don't hatch. I've been getting eggs from 9 chickens since last summer and this would only be our 3rd double.

Now a triple yolk.... that would be rare!

I know I've had 2 double yolks, maybe 3, but I clearly remember 2.

3 eggs so far, and the territory squabbles are working themselves out nicely. egg laying is still going on in the apple coop. It's very windy today and swirling snow is blowing everywhere... I went out to peek, the Big's are hanging out in the store bought coop, the Wee's are in the apple coop, and the dome is empty.

my granddaughter is coming in a week, they will arrive late afternoon on Easter Sunday. she's already wearing shorts and flip flops at home in New Mexico... wonder how she'll feel about snowsuits and boots... ?

Quote: Hello, people. Hope all has been well this past week.
I washed eggs last night. 6 1/2 dozen since Sunday. Midnight has been laying her bright blue (and sometimes green) egg in the nest since her second egg. Yesterday we got a surprise storm of 7 or 8 inches. I kept the door shut (the chickens insisted!) and when I went to collect I found one egg by the door, but all the other eggs were in the boxes.

Life with the aunt is going okay. She will be staying only a short time. I am hopeful that she will be gone before Easter.
I do think that one of my jumbo eggs last week was a triple. I am sure it had two, though. I am getting a "JJJJumbo" egg on most days. I am assuming it is Penny, whom had stopped laying for a month or so. I guess she is making up for eggs lost.

Cheeka, thanks for the advice. I slept great!
That is great! Are you still sleeping okay?
I play French horn. I love it!! But I'm the only one, and it's lonely sometimes.
I played all brass instruments, and a little piano. French Horn included. I was usually the only one too.
I'm so happy!!! We got a 1 composite, and a 1 in sightreading!! A 1 is superior.
Awesome!!!!

some of them refused to turn around...
I love the white one! LOL!

Kids are young enough to love snow year round. Little stinkers!

I only have 4 eggs from the Biker Chicks today. That is very odd. I have 13 laying pullets in there. The Brat's Angels gave me 3/4. Just missing an EE.
